How close did Willie McGinest come to being Bill Buckner 2k2 last night?
EDIT: The Boston Globe agrees with me. See page C12, bottom article, column 2, paragraph 1. "Buckneresque". LOL.

| #2 Posted on 4.2.02 0808.02 | A quick search of bostonglobe.com reveals THREE hits for "Buckner" in the online version of today's paper. Man, can't they just be happy they won the Super Bowl WITHOUT bringing up Buckner?
That McGinest thing is kind of a moot point, though - if he wasn't holding Faulk, then Warner would have been able to dump the ball off to him, so there'd have been no fumble...looked to me like Warner was looking at Faulk all the way before he took off during that play...

Well, I didn't actually see the play (was out smoking a butt), but McGinest is usually better than that. Just like Buckner was usually better than that. The reason we feel the need to bring crap like that up is because we, New England fans as a whole, are cursed. Plain and simple. This is Boston's first championship in any sport since the Celtics' 1986 NBA Finals win. While I am happy about the Patriots win, I think the curse will still stand in baseball for some time now.

| #4 Posted on 4.2.02 0823.07 | Instant Rating: 8.21 | Z is right on the McGinest hold. Warner was looking for Faulk on that play and McGinest mugged him.
And lou you're right about New England fans (I live in Maine). Most people at work today are pretty excited about the Pats, but there is always some black lining in every silver cloud around here! Thus, we must speak about things like Buckner - who was an excellent player for the Sox who would not have been in position to win the Series with him in 1986. The issue was that Dave Stapleton should have been in the game defensively and Buckner's name would have never been tarnished!

Enjoy the football season, already.

| #9 Posted on 7.2.02 0920.31 | They were comparing a holding call by McGinest to Buckner's play? I don't think you can really compare the two. A holding play happens all the time in games even in the Super Bowl. Buckner's screw up was just a fluke.

| #10 Posted on 7.2.02 1157.50 | You know, I know the Red Sox have their problems, but really, of the old-line sports cities in the US, is there any who has a sadder run than Chicago? Our baseball teams have gone a combined 177 years since one last won a World Series, at least Boston only has one long-time loser. Our basketball team had a nice run, but then nothing in the NBA can compare to the Celtics 16 titles. We've won one Super Bowl in 36 years, and only 2 titles in the last 50 years. The Blackhawks haven't won the Cup in about 40 years. It's not an easy task being a Chicago sports fan.

| #12 Posted on 7.2.02 1743.30 | | Ironclad, the Titans are a long, LONG story... I posted it somewhere else around here, although I'm not sure where. You could probably find it. It basically consisted of the then-Oilers screwing over Memphis - not to mention it's about a 3 to 3 1/2 hour drive to Nashville, and we tend to hold grudges around here. (For a noon start game, that means leaving Memphis around 8 on Sunday... not likely given the population that regularly attends church.) Lack of Memphis attendance at Nashville games is basically the same problem that plagued the Oilers here, only in reverse, plus the team will be there, at least until Adams demands a new stadium. Memphians weren't going to support something that'd only be here for 2 years, and then move to our biggest rival's city. |
