Pretty good deal to me, Philly needs another center now that Primeau and Roenick are injured for who knows how long. But I probably would have traded Boucher instead of Ouellet. Boucher has all ready proven he's a one season wonder. Ouellet hasn't gotten that chance yet.

It was a MORON deal, even with Roenick's injury figured in (and Clarke said he'd have done it WITHOUT the injuries from last night). Oates has had a solid career, but he's 117 years old. They traded their goalie of the future (young goalies are always a crapshoot, but I've watched Ouellet quite a bit with the Phantoms and think he's the real deal) and three high picks for an aging assist machine.

Roenick should be back well before the playoffs, and they have an eleven-point lead in their division as it stands. Either Roenick's a lot worse than they're saying, or Clarke's lost his mind again.

They couldn't trade Boucher right now, with Cechmanek still out with a gimpy ankle -- as it is, they're spreading themselves too thin. The only backup in goal they have right now is Neil Little, who has "Career Minor Leaguer" stamped on his forehead. Instead of dealing Boucher or Cechmanek in the offseason and bringing Ouellet up to the big time, now we play Who's Number One? all year again and go digging for prospects. Arrgh!

Now that I have had a chance to think clearly. Clarke has always been an egomaniac. The Rangers make a big deal and trade for Bure so he figures that he has to upstage them. Even with two injured centers he needs to make a deal to:

1. Help the team in the short-run.
2. Give himself an excuse to hold a press conference to hear himself talk.

So he trades for a 39 year old center whose numbers were padded by playing beside Jagr.

I wish I heard him try to explain this deal.

Even better was his explaining the Brashear and Tibbets deal.

Brashear was one of the top 6 forwards on the Flyers when they acquired him. Yeah, right Bobby. Put down the crack pipe Bobby.

Tibbets was acquired for his toughness even though we already have Richardson, Tocchet, Primeau, Fedoruk, and McGillis who can fight. There were a lot of fights in the playoffs in the 70's Clarke, not now.

What a bonehead.

I don't know, Oates has always been a dependable winger. Sure, he's 39, but he's been playing the last few years as if he was 30! What was a bonehead move by Clarke was that he gave the Caps Maxime Ouellet and the Flyers 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Round picks in 2003! When Oates retires and the Caps suddenly get stronger in net and a lot more youth, Clarke will be kicking himself.

I think Oates was a great player long before he played with Jagr. But he is old, and he'll probably play 1, maybe 2 more years. But if the Flyers don't sign him over the summer, (and i have a feeling they won't), then it was a boneheaded move. The Flyers do have that Finnish goalie prospect, so they might not have to rely on Bouch and Cechmanek for years to come. As for the draft picks, the Flyers had 14 picks in this year's draft, so they could afford to give some up. And from what I've read, this year's prospects aren't all that great. But if the Flyers don't at least reach the Cup finals, and don't resign Oates, I think Clarke's days will be numbered.

Clarke has a lifetime contract because him and Snider have some sort of perverted relationship. It goes all the way back to when Jay Snider left and Clarke returned. It is the only explanation for Clarke still being there.

I really like Adam Oates. He's the best 39 year old in the NHL today. While not saying much, he's leading the league in assists--57 with the Caps, he got one with the Flyers last night to bump it to 58 overall...but Jagr only had 27 goals when Oates was with the team. So even if Oates assisted on all of Jagr's goals (he didn't), the majority of his assists went to other players. So he's not just benefitting from playing with Jagr. Besides, the Flyers have talented wingers too, no reason to doubt he won't be a huge addition.

Other pros you're getting--consumate professional; one of the best face-off men in the league, which is huge at crucial moments in the playoffs; can work both the power play and the penalty kill. These are things you love to have for a playoff run.

The downside is that Oates passes up, no pun intended, excellent opportunities to score himself because he's so pass-oriented. Even still, I think this is pretty high up on the list of "problems I'd love to have" when a guy has doled out 58 assists already.

Even if Oates leaves, and who is to say, I think his performance will dictate how bad Clarke will want him back and who will give him the 2 year contract he wants (Washington wasn't going to), I think getting him was a good move for a run at the Cup THIS season.

Giving up draft picks? The NHL draft is almost identical to the MLB draft in that you're drafting so much on potential, the odds of these guys panning out is so slim.

Good deal for both sides, I think.

I find this story amazing and lame at the same time... Wanting to wack your agent because he might go to his team and say Danton is using painkillers & sleeping pills.
