Good gravy, they put HARLEY QUINN on the Suicide Squad? What the hell are they thinking?

On a similar note, RIP to Gail Simone's magnificent Secret Six run.

BOOOOO to the end of Secret Six, and double BOOOOO to the character redesigns for Harley Quinn and Deadshot. I at least understand "sexy" new Harley Quinn, but the Deadshot redesign is indefensible.

Harley being in Suicide Squad kinda makes sense with her being in Gotham Sirens, but the Arkham game design is shit. Also, what the hell is the deal with Sgt. Rock going Call of Duty and the Blackhawks looking like 90s X-Force. Secret Six days were numbered as soon as it got critical acclaim ie fanboys bashing DC for not doing more of this. I swear, I would rather be the under the radar comic that has a decent pull then a critically acclaimed book with just ok numbers. Not loving what I am seeing so far from this reboot.

-Why do we NEED a Batgirl at all?? More redundancy. Plus they have a strong female and disabled character in Oracle. By making Babs walk again they are basically saying that Babs is worthless unless she can kick ass like a man.

-I think with Barry's "experiment, they were trying to point out how desperate he was to help. I figure he isn't dead and once the speed force kicks in, he'll rapidly heal.

-If Superman and Lois not being married is true, it is bs, but typical Johnns and DC. I love 90% of what he does, but damn if the guy doesn't want to change everything back to when he was a kid. Hal coming back was fine, Barry was completely unnecessary, and now we're back to Lois trying to figure out how to get Superman to marry her.

Yeah, you know, when I think about Harley Quinn, the first thing that comes to mind usually isn't BOOBS. But DC now says it should be. BOOBS, puddin'.

I can't even be rational about how upset this makes me. I mean I've had sort of a nagging bad feeling about the reboot but I kept going, "Well Gail Simone on Birds of Prey should be good." Now it feels like they're giving her a "girly" book as a counterpoint to any feminist arguments because of what they're doing with everything else. Way to put women in comics back a decade or two, DC.

I fear the other male-driven ideas of "female empowerment" that will rear their ugly little heads in the reboot.

1. My friend Matt said "Harley Quinn was sacrificed so rest of DCU women could wear pants."

2. I wouldn't want to be the person who shows that design to Bruce Timm and Paul Dini.

I love how they put (arguably) the 'whitest' writer they have in Judd Winick on the 'blackest' character they've got. Winick says that he's talking to college professors about Africa so he can get the feel of the book right.

This should easily top Justice League Dark as the worst idea so far for these relaunches.

----------

EDIT!

And now this whole mess is starting to make a little sense. I don't know how the fuck THIS slipped by me...

http://comics.cosmicbooknews.com/content/superman-split-not-again-lawsuit-update

...and this is ripped from another article I found...

Variety reports that the Krypton origin rights to Superman have been granted to the heirs of Superman creators Siegel and Shuster.

On Wednesday, the judge handling the case ruled that the family had:

"Successfully recaptured" rights to additional works, including the first two weeks of the daily Superman newspaper comic-strips, as well as portions of early Action Comics and Superman comic-books.

The decision was based on the Copyright Act of 1976 and the fact the work was not "works-made-for-hire."

So just what do they own?

[They] now control depictions of Superman's origins from the planet Krypton, his parents Jor-El and Lora, Superman as the infant Kal-El, the launching of the infant Superman into space by his parents as Krypton explodes and his landing on Earth in a fiery crash.

According to Variety, the family also owns, due to a ruling in 2008 about Action Comics #1:

The Superman character, including his costume, his alter-ego as reporter Clark Kent, the feisty reporter Lois Lane, their jobs at the Daily Planet newspaper working for a gruff editor, and the love triangle among Clark/Superman and Lois.

So what is DC/Warner Bros left with?

Superman's ability to fly, the term kryptonite, the Lex Luthor and Jimmy Olsen characters, Superman's powers and expanded origins.

Thats not all, as it is stated the big question is just how much does Warner Bros. owe the family as the rights reverted back in 1999.

I believe this applies to the comic books as Variety notes that Warner Bros. needs to begin production on a new Superman movie (see Man Of Steel by director Zack Snyder) this year. Otherwise, the family can further sue.

Warner Bros, did release the following, "Warner and DC Comics are pleased that the court has affirmed that the vast majority of key elements associated with the Superman character that were developed after Action Comics No. 1 are not part of the copyrights that the plaintiffs have recaptured and therefore remain solely owned by DC Comics."

What is of further interest, in particular with DC Comics, is they just announced the relaunch of the entire line -- including Superman with a new look and rumor of no marriage to Lois Lane.

Writer Geoff Johns even stated he is exploring the human side of the new Justice League he is doing with Jim Lee. With this news, does that mean Superman's new origin in DC Comics will make him one of us?

...uh. What?

http://www.bleedingcool.com/2011/06/09/dc-relaunch-a-brand-new-look-for-superman-supergirl-and-superboy/

...as you can see from the Superman #1 cover, he's wearing a suit of armor. They really ARE making Superman 'human'.

Ah shit...

Oh just fucking paid them already. You are billion dollar company give them a some millions and be done with it. Superman is a billion dollar empire, its not that hard to fork over some cash. You know what Doomsday II if you don't want to pay them and make Conner into Superman. Tearing everything just not pay out is suicide at this moment.

Oh God. THAT's their plan for Superman? That's repulsive. All of it.

If the Man of Steel film has to subscribe to any of that, I fear my cinematic love of Superman may end with Tom Welling ripping his shirt open and running into the camera.

Maybe I'm misreading this, but Gail Simone is off BoP after the relaunch. Duane Swierczynski's the new writer, and Adam Glass is on Suicide Squad. I trust Swierczynski enough to check out his stuff, but I don't know Glass well enough to know if I should give him a chance to make lemonade out of those lemons.

Wow to the Superman stuff. It is becoming more evident that the end of Flashpoint may be the beginning of a complete hiatus from DC. Throw that in with my boycott of Spidey since BND and pretty much it is Walking Dead for me.

Oh well, will save me about $60 a month.

From the same minds that brought you "Wonder Woman in pants" comes "Superman in pants"! Why do all their big shake-ups always seem to involve PANTS? PANTS!!!

So Supergirl's going to go from "alien teenager trying to fit in as a human" to "alien teenager that doesn't give two shits about humans"? That sounds...bloody awful.

I'm not even giving the cutesy Young Justice "I'm whelmed" treatment to 95% of these titles. I'm totally underwhelmed. I couldn't BE anymore underwhelmed.

Everyone in Manhattan has Spidey's powers including MJ and maybe Aunt May. Its called Spider Island. Good luck.

I have no indys I am reading, the wife will get Hellboy and Locke & Key. If I stop going, she may too. So, it will save me $10 to $20 a month if that, so its a really a zero effect. In the end, I'd rather spend the money on new comics.

But it's not a reboot. Just a story arc that's forgotten/ignored a few months from now.
Just like Supes walking across America (or renouncing his citizenship) and what not.

But wow. If I understand the Superman verdict correctly, they have no choice but to currently totally retcon him or at least never mention his origins. "Hero who might or might not be from another world" is all they can say it seems.

If that's the case, they really do need to give him pants to draw away attention from the forced retcon

Marvel is just as big of a mess. The Ultimate Universe has gone to shit since Ultimatum, and the 616 is killing everyone off while at the same time having half a dozen Hulks and giving everyone Spider powers.

For fuck's sake, the skin-tight vinyl body suit wasn't sexy enough? This is the sort of thing that makes me embarrassed to talk about comics.

The case of Siegel and Shuster is slightly unique because they created the Material in Action#1 as a comic strip, tried to sell it in syndication and then repurposed the material as a comic book.
