~(UN)FUN WITH NUM(BERS)~

Y: "Well a portion of the reason why Summerslam '92's buyrate was so low could have been due to the show being taped in England...results were already in America by the time the show was being aired..."

To newsletter subscribers and hotline callers? I don't think that's going to impact it all that much. I think it was that Hogan was the guy and they were putting on a PPV with no Hogan.

"And more so, you could attribute the low business due to Hogan leaving at that time, but business really took a turn for the worse in 1993..."

I hate to harp on this, but '92 is when the slide started, as I hope to demonstrate with this handy chart:

average house show attendance
1992 (pre-WM) - 6,500
1992 (post-WM) - 3,500
1993 - 3,540
1994 - 2,880

I would attribute it to Hogan leaving, tons of negative publicity, Flair the heel chasing Savage the face being a bad program on top, and Ultimate Warrior not being a draw. But it was 1992 when things went from good to bad. Things would go from bad to worse, but if I was going to point to a ... point ... where the slide started, there's a pretty gigantic change in '92 after Wrestlemania and Hogan's departure.

SEA: "I don't think business suffered too badly, if at all, during Shawn's run."

I believe the reader's digest version from the HBK Hall of Fame debates goes: house shows way up (best since '91), PPV buyrates way down from the year before. Ultimately it led to Vince figuring he'd better go get Bret back, but based on the houses being up so much that year until the fall, I wouldn't say that business suffered with Shawn in a way that it wouldn't have with Bret. Plus there was a stigma in losing the ratings war with WCW that Shawn was failing as champion, but I think any WWF champ who was going against the nWo was going to lose.

From Flair's book:

"It seemed to me that Bret cared more about getting “screwed” in Montreal than he did about Owen’s death, and he used his brother’s death to grind his ax with Vince."

He's not that far off-base. While I doubt that he cares MORE about Montreal than what happened to Owen, he did use it to gripe about Vince some more. How many times has he said "Vince McMahon killed my brother?" Ridiculous.

Apparently Bret has realized himself that it's a pretty asinine statement since he's shifting back to being buddy-buddy with Vince again anyway.

And Foley had it coming. Look at all the shots he took at Flair. Yeah, he said he was one of the best ever, etc...but the other unfunny and pointless personal attacks kept piling up (ie, the one where he makes fun of Flair for combing his hair in the mirror "like a 50 year old Fonzie").

HHH does have some pretty good matches, and Shelton Benjamin is not a "far superior in-ring performer". Shelton Benjamin did not make that match what it was, HHH did. Difference of opinion or taste or whatever, but I think to say Shelton Benjamin carried HHH to a good match is really haterizing on HHH, because watching that match, it's quite clear to me that wasn't the case.

Eh, Shelton is more athletic, a better mat-wrestler, and better bumper. Other than psychology, which admittedly is a whole lot more important than the other three, I can't think of a single area in which Triple H is better than Shelton.

His matches aren't that good, many of his "classics" consist of him lying on the ground for at least 20 minutes. There was the Last Man Standing...the Hell in the Cell, both with Michaels and they hardly did anything. So that leaves the match with Shelton, which was a good little TV match and hardly the classic it was received as, and the two triple threat matches which were great and he was a large part of. Can't take anything away from him on those fronts, but it's hardly the mark of the "best in the business".

He has been better than he was, and I'm not saying he's utter crap but I just figure he ought to do better than "pretty good" if he's going to be the center of attention, and clearly that's what he is, because once Benoit wasn't with him he went back where he came from on the card.

I haven't really seen Shelton do any actual mat wrestling, but I'll take your word for it (I missed most of his Smackdown run, I'm not being sarcastic), because HHH's is awful. But yeah, mostly I meant the psychology, where HHH is worlds ahead of Shelton.

I wasn't big on either of those matches, so agreed.

I never said he was the best in the business, I was just saying I don't think Shelton Benjamin is really very good, but that's entirely just me and I'm certainly not trying to sell it as fact. That one match with HHH is the best singles match he's had. I think mostly we're on the same page here.

The last thing we need is Michael Jordan staying around, tarnishing his legacy by holding down the young talent. Wait... p.s. I hope Jimmy Kimmel is canceled soon, so we get more than one Sports Guy column a week.
