TSN.ca & Elsewhere. Detroit Red Wings defenseman Jiri Fischer collapsed on the bench Monday night during a game against the Nashville Predators. Apparently it was a seizure, and may or may not be related to heart problems he had earlier in his career. As far as information is available, he's still in the hospital in stable condition.
The game was cancelled and will be made up at a later date.

Jeez, that kinda thing always scares the hell out of you. I'm glad the NHL cancelled the game-- obviously when something like that happens, members of both teams (and the fans) would rightfully be so busy worrying about Fischer that they wouldn't have their minds on the game. In the NHL, especially, that could be extraordinarily dangerous.
It's what the WWF should have done after Owen Hart died. But fortunately, the result is different here-- Fischer'll be OK, apparently.

There's a bit of a difference, as the NHL isn't publicly traded (IIRC, neither was the WWE at the time) and operates as a consensus of crazy millionaires & billionaires owning teams. That said, officials from the Predators & Wings decided that after 12 minutes, there's no way they could've played and they can reschedule the game for another time.
The NHL has no storylines to work around, and it doesn't operate on strength of PPV revenues and buyrates. However, it shows remarkably good judgment that the game was called and will be moved to another time.

Oddly enough, on the Caps podcast this week, they were talking about how likely it was the league will EXPAND to 32 teams and not contract anytime soon. I think the NHL, sadly, really wants to be the first team in Vegas.
