Another question from the Luddite family.

We're using Firefox and a new remote process for work has mucked up my system.

When closing it down and then re-opening Firefox, it asked for a new user (I think) or the default user. We chose default user and now we have an old set of bookmarks from many moons ago. How do I get my current bookmarks back? I am old and stupid and throw myself on your mercy, please!

I can't find any information in Firefox help about being prompted for a user. Are you sure it's actually Firefox prompting the user, and not Windows or your work's remote access software?

Check your connection settings (Tools/Options/Advanced/Network, then click "Settings".) If it's not selecting "Direct connection to the Internet", try selecting that.

Nope, that's not it.

I think I misspoke in the first post, I think it's looking for the default profile, not user. How do I switch the profile to get my bookmarks back??

Try C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles

Okay, I find two profiles there as you suggested, but how do I change to the correct profile in Firefox?

Mine only has one profile, but it has .default after it.
In the profile there is a bookmark backups folder.
If you check which one has the bookmarks you want, try changing the name of the correct one so it has .default?

OR

there's instructions here http://www.mozilla.org/support/firefox/profile#move
For editing the profile.ini if you can locate the profile you want to use.
My profile.ini is simply:
[General]
StartWithLastProfile=1

[Profile0]
Name=default
IsRelative=1
Path=Profiles/qlveb1o4.default

It may be as simple as "Startwithlastprofile" value being set to 0 if you get prompted every time.
