This really doesn't seem fair to me. First, the article is quite obviously biased, as the fact that HE HAD ALREADY HUNG UP is buried four paragraphs down. I'll bet that anyone who's ever worked at a call center will tell you that their jobs would be soul-crushingly intolerable if they couldn't swear their heads off at the phone after it was hung up. I do it pretty much hourly. I'll admit that the position of 911 dispatcher has a bit more gravitas than helping someone clean spyware from their computer, but anytime you're dealing with people on the phone, you're dealing with idiots, and you're going to have to blow off steam somehow.

Headline News had the story on this morning saying he was fired because he was a trainee that failed his final exam. But getting quoted saying he didn't give a shit about a terrified woman may have caused his management to save face by letting him go.

- Never swear in front of a microphone in radio, and never swear in front of a headset in call centres. You never know WHAT'S being picked up.

- If he's behaving like that in training, then I have no sympathy for him. That kind of negativity just weeks into the job is not the sign of an employee I want on the floor over any kind of extended period of time.

It seems perfectly fair to me. If he'd been on the floor for ages, and was just having a bad day with no priors, whatever, but in TRAINING? Sorry bub.

Both very valid points. Always make sure the mute button is firmly depressed before you start going off. I had to call Verizon on an issue with an aircard at my last job, and I put the tech on mute and started rambling on to one of my coworkers about how I hated the ridiculous script they had to read. Nothing embarrassing or offensive, but also nothing I wanted the tech to hear. Well, turns out I didn't have him on mute. Fortunately, he had a sense of humor about it.

Just don't say it anywhere or anytime it might be picked up and/or do harm. THE 911 operator has to be under control at ALL times. If you really don't care, then get the hell out. Never rely on mute buttons or being off air, never.

http://espn.go.com/boxing/news/2003/0528/1560271.html I'm a bigger Mike Tyson fan than most people, but this is just ridiculous.
