Man, if this turns out to be true, I'll be one happy bastard. Maybe we'll finally get the last two FF games the US hasn't seen on the Advance. The Gamecube game would likely of course be FF11.

I have a PS2 and a Gamecube, so it wouldn't matter much to me, but I'm salivating at the thought of older games for the portable GBA, especially the first four.

Don't be so sure about FFXI, at least not any time soon. FFXI is a MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game, for those not up on their gaming acronyms), and the Gamecube modems are still in the planning stages.

An IGN report hints that the first title will likely be Final Fantasy Unlimited, based on an anime series, and there'll be GC and GBA versions with some connectivity between them. This also makes sense from the standpoint that Square can make money by porting PS2 games to the GC, but make a LOT more by creating new, exclusive titles for both consoles. (In other words, Square junkies with PS2s won't buy a GC to get a game they already have, but a new game is a different story.)

A portable AND TRANSLATED FF2/3/5 would be nice, but has anyone _not_ played FF4, FF6 and Chrono Trigger to death by now? Great games, but between the old versions and emulator ROMs I've worn 'em out.

And Square wouldn't bring Tobal 2 to America, so screw 'em. Bah...

This is so great. And I don't care if I've played it 17 million times already, I want Chrono Trigger on my GBA, and I want it fucking yesterday. This is a bit of a surprising development though, given that Sony owns Square....

That's the same reason I want FF4 for the Advance - portable goodness for my all time favorite game.

I'm getting the feeling that Square is going to develop for the Game Boy Advance as much as possible, as they've been wanting to do that for a long time. The holdback for that was the fact that Nintendo said no way unless you develop for the Gamecube as well. With how badly the FF movie bombed, Square needs to make money, and this is one surefire way to do it.

And I don't think Sony had too many objections with it. They'll still get full support for the PS2, and I'd be honestly surprised if the Gamecube got any exclusive titles. Sony has no handheld system, so profits for the Game Boy Advance won't hurt them any, and if it ups Squaresoft stock, their 19% of the company will be a lot more worthwhile. For that matter, from what I read, Sony doesn't consider the Gamecube to be in direct competition with the PS2 either, due to its much broader age range for marketing.

Yeah, I'm beginning to think that Japanese video game companies are helmed by idiot savants. They make great video games, but Nintendo doesn't think it has any competition, and Sony doesn't think they have any competition. The only one who really realizes what they're doing, business-wise, is Microsoft. Too bad their games suck...

Buy a Playstation then. It's called SaGa Frontier.

For that matter, there's also a SaGa Frontier 2.

and it sucks.

As far as FFXI, they can port it to as many systems as they want, and I still won't be touching it with a 10 foot pole. Final Fantasy is NOT supposed to be a fucking MMORPG. *and now, to save myself some time, a cross-post*

One of the most important parts(if not the most important) of Final Fantasy games are the deep enriching storylines(whether or not they actually are deep and enriching...thats debatable.) MMORPGs have storylines limited to "Hey...we need that thing over there. Go get it. Oh, and be sure to kill lots of monsters and get phat l3wt on the way."

*sniff* And who will be able to forget dialogue such as "Phuck U Bithc!!!11!"

Nah, I want it on the Gameboy or GBA. FF Legends 2 was probably my favorite game growing up. And I never actually finished it until earlier this month (I get sick of leveling up after a while and just run into the boss battles, effectively screwing me by the time I get to the final level).

As for FFXI being a MMORPG, I'm willing to go with it for a while. I won't buy it mind you, but whatever. I don't think that they'd go with it again for a FFXII. Apparently it got a pretty positive response when they showed it in Japan, so if they can sell it, more power to them.

I can see it now. "im saling a brnze ax! chep!"

Oh well...like I said, Final Fantasy 12...that's the ticket.

Well, if you want to be a purist, Phantasy Star was never originally intended to be an MMORPG either. When FF & PS were created, there were no MMORPGs. FFXI and PSO are merely expansions into a new genre. You don't have to play them if you don't like them. But the fact remains that Square will do anything it thinks will make money. Besides, this is far from the first time Square bastardized FF...remember Ehrgeiz? Remember Chocobo Racing? Remember Chocobo's Dungeon?

Aw, bite me. I _loved_ Chocobo's Dungeon 2 and played it to death. (I'm a big fan of Rogue-style random dungeon games, and that was one of the better attempts for a home console. Then again, I like PSX Diablo better than PC Diablo, so what do I know?)

And again, before anyone gets too excited, what appears to be really going on here is that "a Square-affiliated game production company" is getting some Fund Q money (a game-development fund set up by Nintendo's big guy, Hiroshi Yamauchi) to develop games for the GC and GBA. This says to me that there'll be GBA/GC-exclusive titles (the likes of GB "Final Fantasy Legends" or SNES "Secret of Mana", anyone?) developed by that team, and PS2-exclusive titles (FFXI et al) continuing from those who've been building them all along. This isn't Squaresoft announcing that it's diving headlong into GC development, it's a foot in the door.

Since Chrono Trigger and FF4-10 are ALREADY on the PSX... that's not a good omen for a port. We could get lucky, though.

Hell yeah, I remember those. I even have Ehrgeiz, the "fun for the first 15 minutes" fighting game loosely based on Tobal No. 2. Square has always had a habit of taking crap and slapping the Final Fantasy license on it. Final Fantasy was only pure in it's first form. But who cares? All that's really important is that Cactuars are making their triumphant return to Nintendo! 10,000 Needles for all you Nintendo lovers!

I'm gonna get a lot of heat for this, but why is final fantasy really popular? Is it a RPG? What is it about? How can it be so popular if there are over 10 games? Doesn't it get boring? I've never played it (shoot me!). I don't have a PSX or PS2, I'm a PC guy (however, I might get a gamecube when it comes out in Australia around May. What a fuckin' genius microengineering design!). I know a FF game came on the PC a few years ago, but didn't pay any attention to it.

FF is an RPG with a different set of characters/story/world in each game with certain common things in them (a lead hero, a love interest, someone called Cid, giant chickens called chocobo's etc). It's all based around getting weapons and raising your EXP point so you level up and become stronger (just like posting here ). I guessing Mr. Cactaur would probably descrobe it all better as I'm about to join you in the flame pile. As only a casual RPG fan (outside of Zelda) I really got into FFVII, but have never got into any of the rest as IMO, the are indeed all the same. Sorry, people!

Roughly in order:

1) The Final Fantasy games are RPGs, yes. The first one was on the Nintendo Entertainment System/Famicom, followed by sequels and spinoffs on the Famicom, SNES/Super Famicom, Game Boy, PSX and PS2.

2) Each game has its own distinct plotline, but they tend to be about what most RPGs are about (saving the world from dark evil, yadda yadda). There are certain trademarks common to the entire series (spell types and names, items like the Ribbon, Chocobos, a character named Cid), but each game is definitely a standalone experience, and no knowledge of prior games is required.

3) For a series to reach 10+ games, it HAS to be damn popular, else it would've died out long ago.

4) Many find the FF games boring, but then again many find all RPGs boring. That's strictly a matter of personal taste. As far as the RPG fans go, Squaresoft (the designers of the FF series) are generally hailed as being among the best at RPG design -- intricate plots, memorable characters, well-crafted background music, long quests with lots of hidden things to discover, lush graphics and video (more so in the later games).

FF6 (released as FF3 in America) is considered by most to be the masterwork of the series, with Chrono Trigger (same company, different team) rated just as highly or higher. Get yourself a SNES/SFAM emulator for the PC (like zSNES) and check 'em out, if you're so inclined.

I'm partial to Final Fantasy Tactics on the PSX, myself, but that's a very different kind of game (much more akin to the Ogre Battle/Tactics Ogre strategic-combat series, with FF character types/spells/items).
