Was it even released in North America?

Oh yeah, it came out in the states. I remember having it, along with most of my buddies (I had a friend who obsessed on it until he'd beaten it with every combination of characters, including 4 Black Mages and 4 White Mages.)
It's going to be MEGA-hard to find now, though. Demand is still pretty high, and now the old carts are starting to wear out- the battery backup doesn't last forever, after all.
You'd probably have better luck grabbing the remake of it and FF2 that just came out. That is, if you're more interested in playing the game than collecting a piece of gaming history or something.

For five more dollars you can get a brand new PS game with FF2 to boot and not worry about if the old NES is going to start or not. | #5 Posted on 25.6.03 2330.38 | I got mine many years ago for about $10 at Funcoland, with map, instructions, everything. Haven't dusted the cart off in a long time, but it should work well.
As for the game, it's the reason we have all these RPG's now. Dragon Warrior paved the way, FF1 blew it the fuck up. As for whether that's a good thing or a bad thing... well, you decide. The story is bleah, but there's only so much you could do. (Which is why people have been hacking the ROMs... myself included...)

I remeber buying it after beating FF 2 and 3 (American titles) and Chrono Trigger and telling all my guys to attack the same imp out of habit and then 3 of them wasting their attacks.

| #7 Posted on 26.6.03 1506.19 | That was, actually, one aspect of the original FF that I liked. Strictly speaking, RPG rounds in combat are supposed to happen in a ridiculously short amount of time. If you and your 3 buddied decided to attack one of a group of mosters, and your first hit kills it, you don't exactly have enough time to think "hey, its dead!" and alter your attack to hit one of the other imps. I still have not bought the PS1 version of this... hopefully this is NOT something they changed...

| #8 Posted on 26.6.03 1524.22 | I've never played FF1 (although I plan to get the PS version when my list of games to beat goes down), but FF Legend on the Gameboy has the same "problem," which I never minded. I always thought it was part of the strategy to know just about how much damage any given attack did against any type of monster, and to try to figure out the best way to delegate the party's attacks without wasting actions or leaving bad guys standing.
The later FF games (I'm thinking VII - IX), just have the person randomly use the chosen attack on one of the other enemies if his/her target is gone, right?

| #9 Posted on 26.6.03 1613.57 | Final Fantasy Origins for the PS1 has the option to set auto targeting which solves the attacking dead monsters problem, so actually you can play it either way.
Another thing they added was a dash option. This also can be turned on or off depending on your taste.

I have a soft spot for FF1, but mainly because of nostalgia. I like it for its simplicity, believe it or not. It's refreshing to play a "Kill the dragon get the sword" kind of RPG once in a while instead of a "Overcome the inner demons from your traumatic childhood in the orphanage and find your true self while saving the environment" kind of RPGs. :-)

I picked up Chrono Trigger yesterday for SNES. At a big price as well. $89.99 Canadian, plus taxes. A collectors item for sure.

Alot of these games are turning into Collectors Items. My intention is to play them, just to relive some memories...then clean them up and pack them away.
