According to a man named Mark who called in from the Airport to 96Rock, the F-18s were taking off in tandem, but the second pilot decided to show off and hit his afterburners. He then lost control, bounced a couple times and then ejected.
Last I heard the RDU Airport was closed for the afternoon. No idea when flights will start again.
The 1 in 18 number seems a little high but I could believe it. In Oregon we switched to a new system that cut errors down from 2.5% to .8%. But the voters have to take some responsibility for their own actions.
