I had trouble googling an article that sums it up, but here's a short vid documenting whats happening:

one of you can probably find a better link.

Basically, this "celebrity shock sculptor" is set to unveil a bust of Fidel Castro's head on his deathbed in Central Park, NY. It is said that the city of Harlem is supporting the project; which will see the sculpture in the vicinity of the statues of American liberators such as Simon Bolivar and Jose Marti.

Supposedly the people of Harlem celebrate Fidel Castro as a champion of civil rights (wtf?) because 30-something years ago he met with Malcolm X.

This is in stark contrast to the community here in Miami, where the large Cuban population sees Castro as an oppressor, a tyrant... or simply a murderer.

SO it comes down to an outrage on behalf of the Cubans here in Miami, urging the city of New York to ban the piece from Central Park; labeling it an "insult to the Cuban people".

versus

This guy who is allegedly carrying on the wishes of the people of Harlem in commemorating what he sees as... someone who actually should be commemorated in NYC I guess.

----

He was interviewed for a local radio station earlier today, when he was told by the interviewer that Castro was a murderer and a tyrant the sculptor replied,

"Maybe to you"

?!

So I'm to take it that this sculptor has never lived in Cuba, nor is Cuban.

Eh, it's Central Park. If you don't like it, buy some spraypaint.

Hold nothing sacred and you'll never be dissapointed. Especially not this statement.

yeah, of all the Cubans ive heard comment on the matter; 9/10 have practically or straight out said that they are gonna vandalize the statue.

Thing is, i think its gonna be on exhibit for a very short time with heavy security and it will then be removed. It is nothing permanent like the nearby equestrian statues... I think.

Heh. It's funny how we're now seriously discussing space travel as a tourist activity. Really puts the passing of time in perspective. "Back in my day we didn't have to go out to space for a fun time, why we'd just play xbox"-me in 50 years
