- Final Fantasy XIII (The W at Amazon)

So I read Joystiq's review, and got this line

The game gets exceptional after this one moment -- but, regrettably, this moment came for me after suffering 15 hours and 30 minutes of pure, unadulterated tedium.

The review eventually comes to the conclusion that the following 30 hours and ending are more than worth the trouble previously, but it's the sort of thing that makes me not want to even try a game in a series I really do love. (That, and giving up on the last iteration around the 2/3rds mark for similar reasons.)

Metacritic has the game as an 83, with people love & hating mostly depending on their feelings of the gameplay changes and linear storyline.

Other games:
- Resident Evil 5: Gold Edition
- Yakuza 3

Europe
- Final Fantasy XIII (Tuesday release date)
- Nippon Ichi Software America
- Yakuza 3

I've been playing the game for a couple days now, it's actually the first multi-platform release I've picked up for my PS3, I usually get everything on my 360 because there's nothing quite like the achievement pop. I just couldn't deal with another Lost Odyssey disc-popping frenzy.

I'd have to agree with the quoted review. The first couple of hours are almost downright horrible. Luckily, I read this review last week and knew that good things were to come, and I consider myself to be a patient person and a fan of the series, so it was worth buying.

Some early impressions:

The combat system doesn't reveal itself until almost 5 hours into the game, and even then only in small increments. I see potential for greatness, but it's like pulling teeth to get there.

The story still hasn't gotten to a point where I'm on the edge of my seat, but I admittedly haven't quite gotten to that fabled 15-hour point. So I'm anxiously looking forward to giving a shit. Honestly, if it wasn't for the Datalog (aka the Mass Effect codex rip-off), I would have no context for what I'm playing through and would be completely lost as to what the characters are fighting for/against. That just reeks of lazy gamemaking to me, and it's disappointing. You shouldn't have to read what amounts to a prequel book's worth of information in order to understand what the hell anyone's talking about. I get that the characters realistically shouldn't have to spell out what's already happened or the definitions of all of the terms they're using, but then give the game some kind of intro Fallout-style that explains what's been going on in this world before you jump into it.

And wow, there are some characters that really make me want to put down the controller. I know it's a JRPG, but that doesn't mean that every character has to sound like they're voiced by either a five-year-old or someone totally new to the English language. Square Enix really needs a new localization team. And some of the characters' "quips" are just annoying. Add to that the fact that they threw in some more Bioware staples like overhearing NPCs in conversation as you pass them by, but do it in a way that's disjointed and repetitive.

I also don't know how I feel about the whole "Team Leader" thing. In XIII, if your main character dies, it's game over. While realistic, it makes you totally unable to watch and enjoy what your other party members are doing. Not to mention that you have no direct control over what they do, or as of yet, any way to control what kinds of attacks and items they use.

Don't get me wrong, I don't hate the game. The game is absolutely beautiful and some of the characters are well-done. But after recently replaying some of the older FFs, it's tougher to swallow that they start the game off as slowly as they do. I have faith that it's going places, but asking players to play through what is effectively the entire length of the average non-RPG game in order to get to the good stuff is a bit much.

This type of thing is one of the reasons why I could never get into any of the Final Fantasy games. I understand that I don't want to buy a game for 60 or even 40 or 50 bucks that I will beat in one sitting (Lost Via Domus). I do not want to spend an eternity playing a game either. 15 hours seems like the right amount of time for a game to be able to be finished, not for the time when a game is only then supposed to be "picking up" steam.

It is partially due to my impatience, but the only real RPGs that could ever get into were the Super Mario ones.

I'm a little farther into the story now, and yes, it does get better. Still not amazing, but very good and at times inspired. But the game has highlighted one of my other main gripes with JRPGs. The lack of a save-anywhere feature is inexcuseable. It's common courtesy these days. They offer it for all of the handheld FFs, why not the console versions?

All right, against my better judgment I rented FFXIII today for the PS3.

First off, this is the best looking game I have ever seen on my TV. Hell, I can't even do 1080p and it still looks incredible. I can't get over how the fireworks scenes just sparkle. I don't usually care too much about graphics, but man oh man.

The game itself is pretty interesting and I'm slowly getting used to all these millions of things I should do and have to do during the battle scenes. I'm still running into some enemies that seemingly do one hit kills regardless of the methods I use, but for the most part I'm following it well enough.

I have to play it more, and I can't believe I would even say this, but I'm debating buying it (even after having just bought Heavy Rain and after planning on buying God of War III ASAP).

Mega Man 10 is pretty great. It's not quite as good as 9, but it's still really good.

Just got my copy of the re-release of Initial D Extreme Stage (came out on Thursday).

The physics are a pretty big depearture from the PS2 game, Special Stage, and the PSP game, Street Stage.

Still, not a bad game.
