I've played about 4 solid hours on this now, and I thought I'd weigh in. I'm really loving returning to places from the last game and getting new story out of it. I also really enjoy how spirited the story and characters have become. Nobody is moping around depressed anymore, which makes the game itself go much quicker. I'm a bit iffy on the battle system, it's fun but random battles can be a pain, especailly when you've got the wrong jobs out and you have to switch and take a beating. Then again, I've only really been threatened with death once and I've got a giant assortment of potions to heal me up if I ever do. The cameos are fun too, but they throw some weird cameos in there and expect you to remember them (Hey! Look, it's our old buddy third soldier from the left from Final Fantasy X! How's it going?!")

I like Yuna's narritve though. It really allows you to settle in to a deeper portion of the story, which you really wouldn't have gotten without her commenting on each place you visit or person you meet.

For the most part, I'd just say that the game is fun. I've really really enjoyed getting back into the storyline and the characters and thus I've really enjoyed the game. Some of the mini-games are questionable (Math...MATH?! Goddamit, I don't WANT to play your math game), but it's a little like going to a favorite bar you haven't been to in a while. Some of the faces are different, and there's been some remodeling, but it feels nice to be back for a while. It's too early, I guess, for me to say that this is worth $50, but it would have to take a pretty steep nose dive in the later chapters to be anything below a B.

BTW, let's make this a STORYLINE SPOILER FREE THREAD. I've yet to pick up the game, and probably won't until December 15th. I hate Smackdown Spoilers and hate RPG spoilers. But anyway, I hear that the gameplay is much different from FFX. How is it? I hear it has a job system ala FF5 or FFT(God I hated that game, I thought I had patience.)

Fair enough. I wasn't planning on spoiling anything, but I'll tread lightly all the same.

But anyway, I hear that the gameplay is much different from FFX. How is it?

Indeed. Gone are the days of Turn Based battles (which I really enjoyed). I was never a huge fan of the Active Time Battle system, but I've given up my stance against it, I guess. It makes decisions (like using special abilities or items) a real bitch, but it keeps things moving, and some of the combo attacks you can get when you synch up Yuna, Rikku and Paine are pretty fun to do. Outside the battles it's pretty much the same. The much ballyhooed jumping and climbing feature really hasn't had much effect outside the areas that were designed specifically for it. They really need a system where you can control the camera with the right joystick though. I guess other RPGs have just spoiled me in that reguard.

Well, kind of. There is a thing called a "Garment Grid" in which you can put "Dress spheres". Each GG only has room for certain amounts of DSs. Each DS is a job, Black Mage, White Mage, Thief etc. Both things you collect throughout the game. To use any one of them, you have to switch between them during a battle or in the menu screen. In the middle of a battle, let's say you are a warrior and you need to use magic. You've got to open up your garment grid (L1) and select a new job from those available on your grid. In a tense battle, or if you come into a battle with a poor party for the situation, it can be a bit grating to have to do, but I have enjoyed the system for the most part thus far. Be prepared however, to find a combination that you really REALLY like and stick with that for most of at least the first chapter.

The battle system is FAST and a little hard to get used to. I thought FFX had perfected the battle system, but I'll probably get used to this "active" battle system...I've played for 5 hours or so and got 12% done. I was hitting the hotspots WAY too fast as the Zanarkand ruins slaughtered me...

I'm glad there's a thread about this game over here...at the gamefaqs page, all they can seem to talk about is how hot Yuna is and how big Rikku's boobs have gotten.

I'm looking forward to running into the side game you talked about...

Without spoiling anything, I'm really digging the cameos they're throwing in...

One last question for Ex or whoever...I finished X a while back and have forgotten a little backstory...so Tidus was just a dream? Is that right? Why did he disappear?

I'm sure that someone else here can explain it in better detail than I can, but to answer your question, yes, Tidus was a dream of the fayth. When they defeated Sin for good and eventually the aeons(live embodiments of the fayth) and Yu Yevon, the fayth stopped dreaming and Tidus disappeared.

And I can't find a copy of X-2 anywhere around me either yet.

Even having played through the game twice, I'm not sure I can fully answer that question correctly, but I'll give it a shot. But, I'll give it a shot...

Major FFX, light FFX-2 (nothing you haven't probably already heard of or seen if you've seen the Eternal Calm video) SPOILER I GUESS

Spoiler Below: Highlight text to read
Tidus was at one time a real live boy in the city of Zanarkand 1000 years ago before it was destroyed. I think. In any event, there are things called Fayth, spirits that were never sent to "the Farplane" (that is to say heaven or hell or whatever, not the actual physical place in Guadosalam) who can create living embodiments of themselves called Aeons. Each temple on the road to Zanarkand has one (and some off the path have one too), however, none powerful enough to defeat Sin. Tidus, as far as I could tell, was an Aeon as well. Created by the spirits of Zanarkand to join up with Yuna to finally defeat Sin once and for all, send them, and allow them to move on from the world. Unfortunately for Tidus and Yuna, once that happened, the Aeons, including Tidus, got sent as well. However, as we see in the Eternal Calm, Tidus may in fact have been a real live person at one time (as I said earlier). The premise then is for Yuna to try to find some spheres giving her more detail about Tidus the person, and if he still exists seperate from Tidus the Aeon.

I hope that wasn't too confusing.

Uhm, I'm a bit confused:

Spoiler Below: Highlight text to read
So Tidus the boy lived in Zanarkand 1000 years ago. That makes sense. I guess he died in the initial Sin attack as depicted at the Blitzball stadium when Auron showed up? (Or did he? Because in that Zanarkand, Tidus' father (why can't I remember his name?) would never have disappeared previously himself, so maybe that Tidus would have grown up a happy boy in a happy family of blitzball stars?) Tidus the Aeon grows out of the dreams of the fayth, and he enters the real world with Auron and goes on to fall in love with Yuna and fight Yu Yevon. Tidus the Aeon was based on Tidus the boy, but they are not the same, right? So if Yuna is trying to find Tidus the boy, won't she find the spirit of a kid who never met her? Or are the boy and the aeon connected in some way beyond what I understand?

You might not get some of the backstory or some of the cameos and why they happen or why they're neat, but I don't think you'll get too lost. You'll get much more out of it if you've played FF X though.

Eddie:

Spoiler Below: Highlight text to read
Tidus' father is Jecht, by the way. I imagine that Real Jecht may in fact have been Real Tidus' father 1000 years prior. As such, the Fayth when they created their Aeons. I'm even willing to believe that Jecht left Tidus when his mother died. I think Aeon Jecht was sent to do the same thing Aeon Tidus did, but failed because the grouping of Auron, Braska and Jecht didn't have the same type dynamic that Yuna and the Guardians did. Auron, was there because I think he developed some sort of connection with the fayth after he died and Aeon Jecht became Sin. So the Aeons used Auron's spirit to help bridge the gap between Zanarkand and the new world. That's all pretty confusing, but that's how I think it's been laid out.

So yes, what Yuna sees in the sphere would not in fact be the same Tidus that she fell in love with and vis versa which...

Below is an even DEEPER SPOILER from the ending of Chapter 1 of FF X-2:

Spoiler Below: Highlight text to read
they've already noted. In the sphere they find at the end of Chapter 1, Real Tidus calls out for and is killed on behalf of the Summoner Lenne (who looks exactly like Yuna) which causes Yuna to freak out in a jealous rage.

Ex, I don't understand the second spoiler (my reaction: WTF?), but I'm sure I will once I start playing the game. (If I ever get to start it... so many games...)

I wanted to say that Tidus' father was named Jeb (which is close), but I guess that was just the result of my seeing the name of a certain poster here at the W a little too much for my own good.

This just in:

Thunder Planes Tower Calibrations is the most terrible mini-game ever.

Thank you.

Eddie: Once you see the ending for Chapter 1, it'll be a bit easier to read that spoiler, but not necessarily easier to understand it.

Over in Cali, it first showed up at Fry's Electronics,
where they offered a poster of the main characters
with the purchase of the game.

It definitely feels like a sequel; with familiar
characters and monsters, scenery and map layouts,
and the Final Fantasy RPG terminology (Phoenix Downs,
Firagas, etc.)

I really didn't think it was that difficult, the patterns are pretty easy to get used to if you have a NO ENC item. But then again, it may be easy, but it was tedious.

I must have missed that one...I take it if you finish a chapter you lose the chance to play that chapter's "mini" missions...I played that gunning game in Besaid for about 4 straight hours last night. Registered a 1811 hi score!

BTW, has anybody played with the Samauri or Beserker dresspheres yet?? They worth spending time on to level up?? I've got Paine as my warrior and black mage...Rikku as my thief and white mage, and Yuna as my Gunner, gun mage, and songstress.

I haven't done much with the samuri dress sphere, but I enjoy the Berzerker one. Paine works very well with it.

On the mini-missions: There are a handful that go missing after a certain chapter, there are also some that stick around. Typically I'd say just do them when they first show up so you don't get trapped later on.

Wisconsin Badgers: 7-5 (Pop Quiz: 3rd and 6, 15 seconds left in the game, you're down by 6. What play do you run? What do you mean a 3 yard pass down the middle?)

Minnesota Vikings: 7-4 (Thank God for the inneptness that is the Detroit Lions, now go out there and beat Green Bay.)
