I like to think that I ban someone, it's pretty clear what steps that person has taken to get there. If you feel I'm UNCLEAR, by all means I encourage you to hit me with an email or a Private Message and I'll try to give you a better explanation.

(Public threads are frowned upon, but if written well will be tolerated and also provided an equally public response)

Where is the Freedom of speech America always claims? I don't really get it.
I hear this a lot and *I* don't really get it. This board DOES NOT EQUAL "America." There are lots and lots of things we won't let you say here. Most of them, hopefully, are things you aren't going to say ANYWAY.

How can the mods edit a persons post?
As a rule, I don't edit posts - I either delete them or leave them stand. It is EXTREMELY rare that I'll edit a post, but I have been known to do it when (a) excessive quoting has occurred or (b) yukky formatting errors obscure what they're trying to say because of how their post ends up looking, stylistically OR (c) one totally unnecessary paragraph mars a well-thought out MANY paragraphs, in which case I'll delete the (usually trolling) paragraph so everyone can still read the good ones. In all these cases, I don't alter ANY of the actual words used/remaining, and with the exception of removing some trolling, I haven't changed the original poster's intent. Or that's the idea, anyway. If an author feels maligned, again, they're welcome to approach me privately (or publicly, but I'll be more likely to grouse).

Don't get me wrong, what A Fan said up there is really a shame, and not only because I am german I say that there should NEVER EVER be made any comparisons to Hitler, especially not to just express something drastic, because this would downplay the blackest chapter in mankinds history! But I am talking in general. When I have to fear the mods to edit my post, or to offend someone with my thoughts, I am not interested in sharing my opinion.
I don't know how to help you overcome this fear. I honestly don't think you have anything to fear and perhaps you get worried just because you see "(edited by CRZ... )" at the end of the post, but I assure you it's not because I'm trying to engage in anything sinister. It's just normal board admin stuff. I wish more boards had it, but in general I only worry about the one I'm running.

Over the past years I always come to The-W for the Wrestling news (this is my first post ever not in the Wrestling forum btw.), and there's no day I don't check and read about the latest rumours and events. And even if I get banned for this post too, I will still come here and read, and by not posting I can just enjoy the board discussions. So if I am a person like A Fan, and you don't agree with what I am saying, you can ban me if you like, it wouldn't make a big difference to me, it is just that I would be interested in posting more without fearing to offend someone.
See, I don't know why you'd think you'd get banned by this post. You're calm, you're intelligently stating your points, and you've raised issues I can respond to in a civil manner. (I hope!) There is NO WAY I'd ban you for a post like this....or most anyone else.

Finally, if you have to live your life in constant fear of whom you might offend....well, you probably need to work on that. Again, I'm not sure how I can help, but if I CAN, please let me know!

As one who posts here in spurts and who has been edited, I appreciate the "policing" (for lack of a better word) of the board. I enjoy the generally intelligent conversations here, even though I often wish I could better contribute to them. Any time I have had a post edited, I usually got an explanation as to why, and never felt I was being oppressed or any such nonsense.

So for what it's worth Zims, keep up the good work and thanks!

Initially I was confused by this post, but I suppose I understand after thinking about it a little.

Generally, if we are doing things the right way, you are not going to know that we have sent Private Messages to a person, or had discussions with them about their posts. I don't tend to act unilaterally. Because we do this behind the scenes, though, it may seem like we are a bit precocious with our moderation.

I just went through our banned list looking for people who had been a part of the board for a while before getting banned, and there really aren't that many. I think I can justify each of the bannings. Some of the people seemed to hate Chris or I, but still came here every day. I have no idea why you would do that - but they did. That's not really something I want to deal with as part of my hobby. Has that offended some people? Probably - but remember, if we don't want to come here, here doesn't exist. I tend to take hostililty and aggression towards me and my family as a thing that, If I don't have to deal with it, I won't. I'm not sure what you would do in the same situation, but I do know that I'm going to be pretty consistent with the way I deal with it.

I really don't want people to think that we are going to ban them for disagreeing with us. I'm sure that we have banned people we disagree with in the past, but in my case I am especially careful not to ban someone when I am in an argument or disagreement with them. I'm sure I've also failed at this over the last four years of doing this, but in general I think I've been pretty good.

If we've never talked with you about something, and you aren't chat room posting or giving a one sentence reply to every thread on the board, you probably aren't in any risk of being banned. Of course, Im generalizing - we still don't really want list threads or fantasy booking, or all of the other stuff that we've said we don't want. I suppose at some point a formal list might help out - but I hate to make it even more lawyeristic.

Please do not be afraid to ask me about anything regarding the board. The worst thing that is likely to happen is that I won't answer your question.

And from one step further down on the food chain, the non-Zim mods are most definitely accountable to the Brothers Zim for their actions. If one of us gets out of line, the cattle prod comes out, so I wouldn't worry too much on that front.

And, from yet one more step down the food chain, I dont understand why either of you guys would fear the mods or worry about your posts being edited. As long as you are respectful to your fellow Ws and try to follow minimal rules of grammar or spelling, then you shouldnt have to worry about the mods. Moreover, all indications are that you would receive some type of warning if your posts are or could be problematic. Personally, I can't think of a single person who was banned unfairly and without warning. In most cases, I thought the poster got a little too much leeway. But, maybe that's just me.

I guess the question I always ask myself before I post is whether or not my post would add anything of substance to the discussion. I don't worry about disagreeing with CRZ or Guru or any of the mods. They seem to welcome anyone who adds anything productive to the discussions, no matter that poster's point of view. Lastly, to steal the Zims' thunder a little bit, *I* definitely want to hear more from the person with just over 100 posts and less from the person with just over 1,000 posts.

I realize this post adds more redundancy than substance to this thread (thus violating my rule), but maybe it helps to hear the same information from a non-mod and non-serial poster (thus my rule remains law).

I probably most too much, and have occasionally (I hope not more than occasionally) posted some bit of inanity (or horrible spoiler) and been reprimanded, but I'd look at it this way:

CRZ/Guru want to maintain a quality board. I want to be part of a quality board. If I post garbage, and I get a slap on the wrist for it, two things happen: One, the board is kept free of garbage. Two, I become a better poster, and less-inclined to post garbage in the future (ideally, anyway!).

It works for everyone.

UnsUwe,

You needn't concern yourself about the fairness of the brothers Zim. CRZ has made it abundantly clear that he doesn't like me, or a least a lot of what I have to say, at least a half a dozen times, but he still allows me to post on the boards, and now and then I even post something he doesn't openly mock, and when that happens I consider it a small personal victory. On the rare occasion that a more serious issue has arisen, there has been reasonable dialogue, and the world keeps turning. Nothing to worry about.

Yes. I feel you should only post if you have something useful or interesting to add to the discussion. This is why I love this forum and the SomethingAwful forums because bad eggs and trolls are weeded out so some intelligent discussion can happen. Go Brotherz Zim!

That's the trick, though. Because Guru Zim keeps asking the people who show restraint to post more often, but if they posted more often they'd show less restraint and run the risk of making asses of themselves. I've been reading the board for years now, and I've posted maybe a dozen times [EDIT: Geez, 26?], because that's all I've had to say. The only way I can post more is if I'm saying stupid(er) things, which isn't what anyone wants.

Of course, then the question is "am I one of the guys Guru's asking to post more?" Because so far it seems like everyone who assumes that is quickly told that no, they're the ones who should shut it.

Well Jim, in the recent past we've seen TONS of over-posting by people who shouldn't post a lot. There's a lot of guys who post a lot and rarely offend, a bunch of guys who never post due to not wanting to offend, and the precious few that begin in one camp and try to get into the other by posting everything that enters their mind. My best advice is to think before you post, and everything will work itself out.
