As Monaco pushed forward to equalize 19 year-old Carlos Alberto's 39th minute strike, Porto managed to counter-attack twice in 3 minutes, scoring from the brilliant Deco and substitute Dimitri Alinitchev.
Porto has now won the UEFA Cup and Champions League in back to back seasons -- a huge accomplishment not managed since Liverpool did it in 1976 and 1977. Its also interesting that Porto has 9 Portuguese players in its starting 11. I wonder if this bodes well for Portugal to finally realize its promise at the international level and win Euro 2004?

I also wonder if he's ever heard of Mike Price...

The best teams play in the Champions League. The "next best" level of teams play in the UEFA Cup. It's kind of like the Champions League is the NCAA Tournament while the UEFA Cup is the NIT, but the UEFA Cup is much more important than the NIT, as there are so many more European soccer clubs vs. NCAA Division I hoops programs.

But why when I can get the condensed version that actually makes sense here?

Isn't one cup for teams who won their respective countries leagues/regular season and the other is for the whoever won their countries playoff tournament.

Originally posted by uefa.com Eligibility The UEFA Cup is open to teams finishing in leading positions behind the champions in their domestic top divisions, the winners of the national Cup competition, the winners of the League Cup competition in certain countries, the three winners of the final matches in the UEFA Intertoto Cup, and three clubs from UEFA’s annual Fair Play assessment.
Additional qualifiers Certain national champion clubs which do not qualify for the UEFA Champions League in a particular season participate in the same season’s UEFA Cup. In addition, the 16 clubs eliminated from the UEFA Champions League third qualifying round switch to the UEFA Cup at the first round stage, while the eight third-placed clubs at the end of the UEFA Champions League group stage also revert to the UEFA Cup, but they enter the competition at the third round. From the 1997/98 season, the final has been played over one match at a neutral venue.

Still, it was nice to see Porto win the CL...it's always nice to see one of the smaller clubs take a trophy now and then.
