MINNEAPOLIS-- An answer to the Brett Favre soap opera appears to be forthcoming.

WDAM Television is reporting that Favre left Hattiesburg, Mississippi this afternoon taking off from Pine Belt Regional Airport at 1:15 p.m. Tuesday, headed for Minnesota.

The trip follows reports that 3 prominent Viking players were absent from practice Tuesday morning, traveling to Favre's hometown to try and convince him to return for one more year.

The Star Tribune is reporting that kicker and longtime Favre pal Ryan Longwell, and all-pros Steve Hutchinson and Jared Allen were all absent from Vikings practice on Tuesday, and were en route to Hattiesburg for a visit with the ever-wavering quarterback. All are close with Favre, and the club is likely hoping they can convince him to return to a team many consider a Super Bowl favorite.

Favre has not come to a final decision yet as he continues to debate the health of his injured left ankle. He underwent surgery in May to have scar tissue and bone spurs removed. Just days ago he was examined by Dr. James Andrews, the noted surgeon who performed the procedure to check on his recovery. Farve told ESPN's Ed Werder that he would return for another year if the ankle was healthy.

It was a year ago this week that Favre decided to end a second retirement and play for the Vikings. He has one year remaining on the two-year deal he signed last August 18, and unconfirmed reports indicate the Vikings have offered to sweeten the financial pot with a package approaching $20M for one year.

-------------------------------------------------------

Well, it was the Tuesday last year after the first pre-season game that Favre got escorted from the airport to Winter Park by Chilly, why not the same this year?

Rich Eisen is on the newest Sports Guy podcast (sports.espn.go.com), and he credits another NFL Network pro-turned-analyst saying Favre might return but wants no part of playing the opening game in New Orleans with a weak ankle.

He also says a scenario exists that would allow the Vikings to put Favre on a reserve list for any regular season games he might skip and not lose his consecutive streak list.

That I don't understand. If he misses games, it's not a streak anymore, right?

It sounds like they're only counting games he is physically able to preform, or whatever. It's a silly record anyway. If the Skins really wanted to, they could put me under contract and hand off the ball for the 1st play of every game for the next 20 years and I could break his streak of starting games.

Prediction: He tells the teammates he retires.

Bonus prediction: He comes out of retirement in Week 3.

Welcome home, men of the 2nd Bn, 127th Infantry, 32d "Red Arrow" Brigade, WI Army National Guard! Job well done in Iraq!

He wouldn't come all the way to MN to tell them he's retiring. He never bothered to tell anybody on any of his old teams in person before any of his other bullsh*t retirements.

He's back to play. And I hope Dom Capers puts a bullseye on that ankle.

If 1 November 2009 was the duel in The Empire Strikes Back, then October 24th had BETTER be the rematch from Return of the Jedi...and the guy w/ green wins.

OK, so Minnesota is built to win this year, but other than the QB position, they should be built to win for the next 2 or 3 seasons. So what do they do after the 2010? Surely this will be it for Favre.

I don't think you can rely on Tavaris Jackson or Sage Rosenfels, but if they were your guys, you'd already be using one of them.

Do you draft a rookie QB in the '11 draft to lead a playoff-caliber team?

Or who out there is worth pursuing in free agency or going & trying to make a trade for that can come in and start for you next season?

Kyle Orton? Kellen Clemmens? Matt Hasselback? Matt Moore? Dennis Dixon?

They could be working under the presumption that the 2011 season will either not exist or be abbreviated. If it is the former, they don't need a QB. If it is the latter, they might try to get Favre for a 10 game type season.

Well, these three months of speculation and attention-seeking were fun, as always.

Same time next year, Brett?

If anyone missed the Minn/SF game last night, catch it on the NFL Network. Skip the first half (Favre plays one series and is out anyway). Watch third-string QBs Webb and Nixon go for broke and stake claims as ready-for-primetime players. That is what preseason football should be.

Saturday night here, they had the replay of the first Vikes game, and watching it again, I was REALLY impressed with Webb. Then, Sunday night, he had that TD run and got to break out his End Zone Dance, much to Favre's (and all of ours) amusement. Webb is either going to be our man next year or one helluva bargaining/trading chip.

He's taken four, count 'em, FOUR snaps in the NFL, including a touchdown! (nfl.com) No passes thrown though.
