I might be on my Pat Malone here, but I thought this episode was probably the best since the Stewie killed Lois eps. I enjoyed the Back to the Future and Indiana Jones sequences. And I still maintain that jumping out of a plane in a raft and surviving is just as silly as surviving a nuke blast in a lead lined fridge. Also liked the Loony Tunes Am I looking in a mirror or is it someone else bit with Hitler. I thought the anti republican sentiment was a bit heavy handed, or at best, utilised overplayed jokes. Adding a footnote, my Grandfather was a Lancaster bomber crewman.
Ah, the mirror gag (youtube.com) goes back at least to 1933 & the Marx Brothers in Duck Soup (en.wikipedia.org). And they stole it crom Charlie Chaplin. There have been many homages to it since, including in Looney Tunes.
Overall, I liked the episode, although there were a few too many random little things. For examples, the flying Vikings & the Mean Joe Green bits were awkward. (And, yes, I do realise I'm saying that in the context of Family Guy, which is all about random odd bits.)
I did love Mort interrupting them from the jaunty song & dance number.
I thought it was great. The German invasion of Poland along with the Jewish wedding song was probably the best emotional animation done by the series. I do love the McCain/Palin button and the Flash Gordon Valkeries.
Mythbusters proved you could actually do the Indiana Jones jumping out of a raft trick. Indy stunts usually pass the mustard on the show which probably erks the hell out of them.
Originally posted by Big BadOf all the good gags in this episode, it was the Terrance Trent D'Arby radar joke that really cracked me up.
YES!!! That was awesome. I have been humming that song for the last few days.
The more I reflect on this episode, the more I liked it. In addition to the Flash Gordon bit, (looked like they borrowed Stan's chin!), I also got a great laugh from the tremendous pile of cop cars by the submarine.
"As you may have read in Robert Parker's Wine Newsletter, 'Donaghy Estates tastes like the urine of Satan, after a hefty portion of asparagus.'" Jack Donaghy, 30 Rock
I liked the European see-n-say. The Flash Gordon reference was also great.
Maybe I'm too sensitive, but the McCain/Palin/Nazi joke was just stupid. George Bush...yeah,OK I can see the joke there. But John McCain? I man who fought FOR this country and proved to be quite the hero. Dumb.
I had just bent down to tighten my nuts, and there was a double yellow line, see? And next thing I knew, there was policeman behind me. He put a sticker on my helmet and tried to clamp me.
Saw this last night because I love me some Pineapple Express and am a huge Danny McBride fan. If Pineapple Express was an homage to 80's comedy action movies, this is an homage to the 80's Swords & Sorcery genre.
