I had to check out this episode after word-of-mouth got around to me, because I had to think, "No...they wouldn't do something THAT dumb, would they?"

And hey, look at that! THEY KILLED OFF BRIAN!

You can argue that whatever recent episodes of Family Guy worked, it was because of Brian and Stewie. To completely kill off one of those characters is beyond idiotic. If the argument is that their stories have run their course, then you could pretty much make that exact same argument for the show at-large.

I could comment on the rest of the show, whether it's the putrid, unfunny depiction of Native Americans, the black woman at the funeral, or Quagmire ignoring the whole funeral to watch the game on his phone (Ok, I knew Quagmire hated him, but JESUS, the guy's DEAD!), but let's face it. None of it matters against the heaviness of the main plot.

So where does this show even go from here? Is there even a long-term plan for this show anymore? I just don't get it.

I have to imagine that there is some plan to bring back Brian, either through some reincarnation episode or maybe completely ignore that he died. Either way, I enjoyed Paulie Walnuts as the new dog, Vinnie.

Can't believe it'll stick, but I remember thinking it was strange that Brian wasn't mentioned in the description of next year's FG-Simpsons crossover episode.

We're all talking about a show everyone had stopped talking about, so...

Congratulations, Seth MacFarlane!

Did they also kill off Mayor West, or was the ghost thing a one-off gag, like him being 95% helium?

Wait, Stewie and Brian plots were consistently the best things about Family Guy so they killed off one half of the pair?

Edit: Just saw it. Can we kill off Vinnie already because he's just painfully unfunny. I'd rather have a dog voiced by Carrot Top.

It is hard to think a death on a show like this would stick. Two episodes ago Neil got tied up like a balloon and popped. He was back at the end of the episode.

Not to sound morbid, but having Brian hit by a car is the best way to have the viewers relate to the death. Anyone who has ever had a dog hit by a car knows how sad this is.

I though a big event they were building up towards would be a divorse between Peter and Lois. Stewie has said he's seen mommy holding another woman's hand. And that she has a second cell phone. Peter saying he hasn't been happy in years.

That might still be coming. If you think back to the Season 9 premiere, you'll recall that Lois counted on Peter to save her when Diane Simmons had a gun to her back and Peter completely let her down. I'm still convinced that moment is going to come back into play at some point.

Doesn't Stewie have a time machine that's been used numerous times? Just saying.

That's the other crux of the episode. Brian was killed right after Stewie took the time machine apart and the parts are no longer available to re-assemble it. After trying like hell, he gives up and accepts his loss.

I haven't see a new episode of Family Guy in years. Not trolling I swear... Are these changes (dead Brian, possible divorce, etc.) cousin Oliver changes or do they make sense continuity- and storyline-wise?

No show cares less about continuity than Family Guy, though when they focus an entire episode around a 'big' change, it tends to stick. My guess is that Brian will be gone for at least a while...

...though it wouldn't totally shock me if he's back within a few weeks. Remember, American Dad (another Seth show, albeit one he's not involved in creatively) randomly ended one episode with

all of the main characters being killed by a demonic hot tub
and by the next show they were all back, normal as ever.
