Has anyone played Fable yet? I've looked at some of the reviews and the depth of the game (ie - getting battle scars, tattoos, the level of interaction with NPCs), looks intriguing. But I hear it's short, too.
I don't have an Xbox, but is this a system-seller?
"If you want me to watch the shows, buy tickets when you come to town, buy t-shirts, and pay for a PPV every three days, you bet your ass I'm going to hard to impress. And when you give me stuff that blows and then tell me I don't get a vote on sharing that opinion, I'm going to tell you to go catch an STD." - Hogan's My Dad
"My brother saw the Undertaker walking through an airport." - Rex "Was he no-selling?" - Me
I haven't played it, but I'm on the fence whether or not to buy it. On one hand, I've heard it's the greatest game in the universe (from the guy who I see all the time at the comic book shop who then proceeded to make the shop owner go on the XbBox website to check the game out for himself). On the other, I've heard it's a good game (from my buddy, a Gamestop Manager), but it's not even the best RPG to come out for the XBox (KOTOR and/or Morrowind are usually stated as being better). I don't think it warrants a system buy like KOTOR or Halo did, but some might disagree. Keep in mind that it's not like Morrowing, with an open ending and a ton of optional stuff, it's more like an adventure game type RPG, with a clear storyline and linear quests.
Bought it yesterday. The comparison that's been tossed around most is "a more action-heavy Morrowind"; I'd say a more accurate statement is "a more RPG-heavy Zelda."
It's a good deal of fun, the production values are extremely impressive, and the immersive world is, in fact, immersive--albeit occasionally annoying (you start the game as a farmboy, so until you buy a new title, everyone calls you "Chicken Chaser")--and mostly what was hoped for. There are some features that were unfortunately cut (probably the most notable is that you can no longer have children), but in actual gameplay you're generally ensorcelled enough so as not to notice.
Is it a system-seller...that's a tough one. I myself bought an X-Box for the game--years ago, when it was still named Project Ego and had no limits whatsoever. Project Ego was a system-seller.
Fable...is not. If you have the money, I would advise buying one, but don't just do it for Fable, do it for the other great games the system has; Halo (and the upcoming sequel), KOTOR, MechAssault etc.
IF Halo 2 isn't a system seller for you (in case your not a FPS fan) then get it for Knight of the Republic 2. And pick up part 1 on the cheap. I have Fable in the mail thanks to slow ass EBgames.com but I will post my impressions as soon as I get it.

OK, so I went and bought it today. Very good game, but not a system-seller. I'm having a lot of fun playing it so far, and both the story and the graphics seem to be very good. Only problem I have is wonky combat system, but I think I just need to get used to it.
Well, Game Informer Magazine had nothing but praise for this game- and they are sometimes very critical, so go figure. I for one, have mentioned the game to everyone I know with an Xbox because alas, I am a PS2 owner (and poor, as it turns out) and I really want to play this game.
Is it a system seller? Who cares, its not like once you buy this game, your XBOX license expires- you can go on to buy Halo 2, GTA: San Andreas for Xbox and many other great available titles...

I was tracking this game since it's inception as Project Ego, but all the articles I read about it ovr the past year or so were talking about how it had been seriously stripped down from it's original concept, and that turned me off.
The reviews are uniformly positive, but I'll prolly wait and pick it up for cheap in a month or so.
I have to tell you the truth. While it is a great game, it's painfully short. I finished the main story arc in just under 11 hours, and the game sort of forces you in that direction, IMHO. It looks great, and once you get used to it, the game-play works out well. It was just way too short. At least I can get Tiger Woods 2005 now without sacrificing time for Fable.

Pre post note: HAIL SNITSKEY.Apparently this thing is selling like crazy, rolling over KOTOR to be the fastest selling XBox release yet, selling half as many copies in one week that KOTOR sold in the first 6 months.
I have a feeling any records it holds will be short-lived since November 9th is rapidly approaching, but it's still pretty impressive.
Amusing side note - according to IGN, Fable pulled in more money than Sky Captain & The World of Tomorrow did in its first week.
Man I am disappointed. Mostly by how linear it actually is while pretending it is so open ended. Morrowwind and KOTOR remain the best RPGish games for X-Box. Although I haven't got far, I am not impressed. I guess I had my expectations up too high. I will probably be playing Def Jam 2 more then Fable.
*Edit* I am hearing great things about X-Men: Legends and I now regret not buying it now, so maybe X Men Legends will be one of the better RPGish games.

Just to update, I beat Fable tonight after turning off the Penn State game. Good game (Fable, not PSU), but it was way too short. For all the expectations, I was a little disappointed, but it was a good ride while it lasted (10.5 hours). It's definately a rent or a discounted buy, but I don't think it's worth a full price at the moment.
I guess I could go play it and do all evil stuff (I did good), and apparently there are 4 endings, but I don't think I'll be doing that.
I still stand by the hinky control system. It's probably just the awkward X-Box controller, but I found myself casting spells when I didn't mean to (and sending villagers flying as a result) and zooming in with the left thumbstick when I didn't want to. And don't get me started on trying to sneak or run (when I wanted to do one, I always seemed to do the other).
