Actually I'm delighted that France are out, even though it makes me 0 for 2 so far in quarter-final predictions. The Greeks played very well against what should have been a superior opponent, at least on paper. The French, though, didn't seem inspired in any way. They pressed somewhat in the second half but never gave you the impression that they were championship material.

The Greeks are the Calgary Flames of Euro 2004. Like the Flames, though, they won't win it all despite their valiant efforts and multiple upsets. The Czechs appear now to have the easiest road to the Finals and are playing the best football to boot.

Who's booking this stuff. England, Spain, Italy, France. All major Euro soccer powers with major leagues are on the outside looking in leaving the likes of Greece and Denmark... This along with the some lesser power teams being the finals of the FA Cup maybe European soccer has a lot more parody then I or most expected.

Well, once Spain bowed out, my money went straight to the only other European country I've stepped foot in...Portugal.

Ah, but the Netherlands exorcises the demons of penalty shoot-outs past as Van Der Sar comes up with a big save!

How many chances did both sides have during that match? Fantastic, especially in the extra time.

One semi-final is set: Portugal vs. The Netherlands. Greece will take on the winner of tomorrow's Czech Republic/Denmark tilt.

Oh so close for Canucklover going 0-3, only dMr has that honor (you might ask where's my predictions, well lets just say I'm glad I didn't put them in writing)... The Czech should win but do I say that with any confidence, ummm no LoL

I thought Netherlands/Sweden would have been more offensive but both teams didn't seem to want to make a mistake, Sweden almost squeaked by.

I can't very well excuse the play of the French side. Zidane played uninspired ball, Santini stuck with an uneffective 4-4-2 plan which provides very little in the way of offense, and Santini and his team could not work together.

However, it seems this tournament has outlined a problem with football right now. The major sides, such as France, England and Italy, play constantly with many friendlies. By the time they get to tournament time, they are worn out, as opposed to the smaller sides.

It is interesting seeing teams like Greece advance, and I hope they win, but we need to look at keeping France more rested in the future.

Also now, Zidane and Thierry Henry are fighting about who gets to lead the team. Being optimistic, maybe this will motivate Zidane.

Damnit I was hoping nobody would notice I guess thats what I get for posting big assed explanations about my predictions.

In my defence, 2 of my picks only lost on pens, and the England game might have been different (though deep down I'm delighted it wasn't) if Rooney hadn't knackered his foot in the first half. My predictions for the first round were also stupendous (18 of 24 no less) but given that I didn't post 'em here that counts for not a lot.

At least the Czech's saved me from a whitewash but even then I can take little credit for it given how little resemblance the game bore to my expectations.

Anyway, while I'm on such a superlative run of failure I might as well present my semi-final predictions

Holland v Portugal

The media over here spent so much time criticising the ref in the England/Portugal game they almost forgot to mention how darned well Portugal played. In spite of that they still lack a cutting edge which Holland have thanks to Ruud. If Portugal get the 1st goal though they should hold on to win 2-1.

Czech Rep vs Greece

Happy as I am to see young Stelios and the Greeks pulling off shock after shock, you have no idea how much money the swines have lost me in this tournament so I'm loathe to go against them again. But hey, I've taken the Czech's from the start and I can't really stop now. Incidentally though, if Nedved picks up a booking and misses the final thanks to the pathetic actions of Gronkjaer in the quarters it will be an absolute disgrace. Czech's win 2-0.

This is slightly off-topic, but hey, it can go in the soccer thread...

Over the last couple of days I saw (first) a report that Wayne Rooney was going from Everton to Manchester United for $91 million, then in yesterday's P-I there was a blurb about Man U sending Van Nistelrooy to Real Madrid for $55 million. Anyone closer to the EPL than me heard anything that would either confirm or refute this?

EDIT: Portugal 2, Netherlands 1. Between Porto winning Champions League and this it would be a heady time to be a Portugese football fan.
