Why'd they name him Eugene? Is that a rib on someone like Virgil/Dusty Rhodes? They should've named him Tommy, so you'd get Something About Mary and South Park references at the same time...TOMM-AY!!!

I'll give it a few weeks for Gerwitz to dazzle me with this fresh brain-fart, but even if it does suck hard, as long as they keep it in the under-card quagmire, it won't have much of a drag on their overall programming.

In other words, leave it to Lawlor, and keep it in small doses.

I keep going back to George Steele. I don't recall facial hair - but he had 10x more back hair than Albert.

And the name Eugene - I guess he's the next "mean Gene"

Finally - to Kevintripod who started this thread - I don't think any of the posters who are hoping this gimmick becomes entertaining mean to be disrespectful to your brother. I have a close friend (who is only mildly retarded), and he is thrilled with this gimmick. (It was his idea I posted that Eugene fight Vince at a PPV.) He often refers to himself and some of the others in his group as "retards" - but mostly the others because they don't all follow wrestling. If you or your brother is offended - please remember wrestling is intended as an escape - I'm glad you recognize you are potentially biased on this gimmick as it may not afford you the opportunity to escape.

I think the ‘special’ character gimmick is a bold move by WWE, and it could turn out for the better, but they have to be careful. If the writers actually think about what they’re writing before they do it, I don’t see any problems with Eugene. As long as he isn’t exploited or anyone is a bigot about it- “He can’t wrestle, he might get seriously hurt!” is acceptable, “But, he’s a retard!” isn’t. This might be the chance WWE bungled with Gowen and the “overcoming tremendous odds” gimmick, so long as they don’t over do it. As far as if/when they put him in matches, they need to be realistic, but not harsh; having wrestlers lay down for him is bad, having him get squashed is worse.

I’m curious to see how it goes, and for right now I’ll stay open-minded and impartial.

Eugene is definitely a face. It’s the same concept as a wrestler returning from an injury (Benoit, Lita, Angle, Edge, etc), the audience feels for them and just doesn’t have the heart to boo, even if they did before the injury. Unless they could find some way for Eugene to take a chair (or other weapon) and intentionally attack, say Lita, Jericho or Benoit, he’s not turning heel any time soon. Same thing goes about the divas- I don’t want them to have Eugene try to molest them (or vice versa), that gimmick had.

On a side note, having Eugene call the heels ‘bad’ names would be humorous; “Trish/Hunter/Molly/etc. is a butthead!” would make my day.

Edit: I just went back and read too-old-now's post about his friend who is mildly handicapped loving the gimmick, and I wanted to bring up Billy and Chuck. Remember how the gay rights groups loved the idea of openly gay wrestlers? Not only that, but getting married on the show? Same potential here. Like I said before, if the gimmick is tastefully done, there shouldn't be any problems.

Regal had something like this going with Tajiri back before the Invasion. Remember how he just thought Tajiri was some kind of idiot until he actually saw him wrestle? Regal's facial expressions were priceless. He makes a great straight man in comedy duos. I can't wait to see his face when he sees Eugene wrestle for the first time.

I'll be up front and say that I have a sick and demented sense of humor, but I see nothing wrong with Eugene's character or debut.

Come on, this is pro wrestling. Mike Shaw ALONE has had multiple gimmicks that rival this. The McMahons have trotted out Steele, Hacksaw, Kamala, Kane mocked for years as "the Big Red Retard," the Bushwhackers, Perry Saturn w/Moppy, Damian Demento, the Berzerker, the Oddities, the Moondogs, at least one entire hillbilly _family_ (two if you count the Godwins), and a white thug hypnotized into believing that he's really from deepest Africa, and NOW we're going to get upset over a wrestling character who doesn't have it all together upstairs?

The Eugene gimmick may get old fast if the material they have in mind is weak, but it'll be cheap laughs for a while and there are always ways out of it later if they decide it's played out. (Imagine the look on Regal's face when, after he suffers a thousand indignities at Eugene's hands, Bischoff tells Eugene "Okay, you can stop now, we've ribbed him long enough" and Eugene is suddenly perfectly normal, laughing his ass off after pulling off the act and making Regal look ridiculous for months.)

That was something else I didn't get when I realized that Eugene was 'special' in that way. Why would Eric's sister want her son to get a wrestling contract considering his handicap? And it's not because she's Bischoff's sister, because Eric sounded pretty resentful about signing Eugene to begin with. I wouldn't be surprised if vsp's idea was the eventual outcome, leading to a Eugene/Regal feud. And considering that Eugene would have been conspiring with Eric, that would make Regal the face, which he pretty much is now considering who he's a manager for, and he's just returning from an injury.

While this gimmick has Red Rooster potential (ie. kill the career of a talented worker) written all over it, I'm not going to complain in the least. William Regal is back on my TV, and that absolutely made my night. I think I'll just turn my brain off and enjoy it, because I'm sure there will be no shortage of comedy with these two.

And to whoever mentioned a Regal/Eugene tag team....what about Tajiri/Eugene?

I never understood the whole concept behind the Red Rooster.

What was Terry Taylor supposed to be? Was he supposed to be a giant chicken or did he get hit on his head with a piece of plaster and just think he was a giant chicken. Was there some kind of story line behind this?

Ideally, if the story line had worked where was it supposed to go?

I like the idea of a Tajiri/Eugene tag team. Tajiri isn't doing anything anyway.

Is Regal all the way back - has he been cleared to wrestle?
If he is only used as a manager of retards - I'll still love watching him. From my friend - the WWE is bringing back managers and stables, and retards all at once!

My buddy also wants to know if Eugene is a face, how long before Evolution (particularly Batista) or some other dastardly heel makes him bleed? A sick beatdown like Shelton endured - lying in a pool of his own blood. Viscious beating up on a retard will definitely earn a heel heat.

Kudos for the WWE for not simply giving him the Garrison Cade / Paul London generic introduction. At least they are trying.

What about Regal maybe trying to get the retard laid - only to set him up to enter a darkened room, after commercial find him in a 3-way with Mark Henry and Mae Young.

Any retarded midgets to throw in to the mix...How about Trish hitting Lita on the head and making her a retard, too.

The last nugget from my mildly mentally challenged friend is his suggestion for the following sign: RETARDS = RATINGS!

I like Eugene and think the angle has great potential with Regal involved. Like vsp, I might have a twisted sense of humor, but I can't see what all the fuss is about. I laughed out loud at Eugene and the fans already are getting behind him.
Some of you people need to get out of this self-righteous, PC mode and recover your inner mark. I've always loved crazy gimmicks with mentally challenged people. Berzerker, Damian Demento, George Steele, Zeus...say what you want about their quality, but they entertain ME, so I say bring on the "special" action.

I just think it'll end up being another career-stopper like Storm's "Dancing Man with a Big Dick" character, Goldust's Tourettes gimmick, Rosey's "SHIT" gimmick, Little Johnny, Rico, Testicles, and the rest of them.

It'll be funny for a few weeks then the one-trick joke will wear thin and Dinsmore will be stuck on Heat for eternity and be forever that guy who was retarded. Nick Dinsmore deserves better then that.

I realize he isn't Deaf or Blind, but in my world "retarded" plus "Tommy" equals "The Who".

This could be really hideously tasteless or actually pretty good, depending on the writers. If they just make him obnoxious and use him for toilet humor, this will be very ugly. However, I could see them building him up as a really sweet, lovable character. I like the idea of him bringing out old gimmicks like he did with the Bushwhackers. It'll get big pops and get him over as a mentally handicapped guy who just loves wrestling to death. If they coupled that with making him a supremely talented wrestler in the ring, it could really work.

I can just imagine him in a feud with Randy Orton, with his arrogant pretty-boy character, where Orton torments him and torments him, and when they finally get in the ring, Eugene rips him to PIECES and takes his title. If they really get the gimmick right, having this slow guy who is the ultimate mark win a big title from a piece of shit like Orton might get him really over. This angle would end with Orton jettisoned to Heat where he belongs, as long as I'm fantasy booking.

You guys who are all "Poor Nick Dinsmore!" and "He deserves better!" need to think about what you are saying. I will never feel sorry for a professional wrestler - no matter how bad the gimmick - as long as he or she is drawing one of those big paychecks.
What do midcard wrestlers make nowadays? $75,000? If that's the case, Dinsmore makes about three times as much jack as me, not to mention he's on national television.
"Poor Nick Dinsmore" indeed! I will go out every night and act like a giant shit-eating wombat for even that much money and the chance to be adored by millions.

And while I'm at it, what's with everyone calling him "Nick Dinsmore" like he was at your house last week eating a bologna sandwich? Where do you guys know him from, OVW?
If that's the case, then at least a small segment of fans has seen him wrestle as a normal dude, so maybe that can lead to the "OMG HE'S FAKING BEING RETARDED!" angle some of you want.

Since George Steele's name keeps getting brought up, lets differentiate between psychotic heel George Steele and post faced turned George Steele who had the electro-shock therapy on Tuesday Night Titans and became infatuated with "Mine". George Steele psychotic heel was during the days of Vince Sr., George Steele joke was during Vince Jr.
With the Berzerker, I always enjoyed him more as a cheap rip-off of Bruiser Brody during his Nord the Barbarian days than during his WWF run as Berzerker.
The reason this character has the red light going off is because of Vince's track record: Takes a quality former North Ameican Champion/UWF TV/National Champion in Terry Taylor and flushes his career down the toilet with Red Rooster.
Gobbledygooker.
Takes a bloody thirsty team like the Sheepherders and turns them into clowns as the Bushwhackers.
Takes Goldust, who was probably as over as he ever was, and puts in the stuttering gimmick, thus derailing him.
If Vince had a decent track record with this type of idea, he would deserve the benefit of the doubt. But, when you've seen the utter disasters that this path has spawned previously, its tough not to think 'Here we go again.'

I want you to know, I agree with everything I just said.

Yes, and we all know how well THAT storyline paid off.

It's gotten to the point now where I expect WWE to fail rather than succeed at any new venture or gimmick they try. I'm not holding my breath on Eugene.

The character of Eugine could be good for the show.. but if incorrectly used it can also be a low point for them..

It all depends on how they write the character.. If Eugine is to be a "chamelion" wrestler (using moves he's learned from watching his favorite wrestlers which could lead to great story lines bringing cameo's for older wrestlers..) then the character has the chance to grow and become popular.. The character could be a "hero".. not necessairly a title holder but a feel good character.. which in my opinion is really missing.. It's something that Mick Foley used to be but I won't go there...

If they follow the story line of a person overcoming his challenges with his own methods then the character will be great.. if they try to treat it like they did with Zack Gowan.. they'll waste a great story line..

I wish I could talk to Pat Patterson or whoever is creating the storylines these days..
