You forget he is Jim Carey and that is quite an achievement in itself. Not only that but if you do not fall in love with Kate Winslet in this movie than there is something wrong with you. I've never seen any movie quite like this. It's very quirky but boy is it great. It's by Charlie Kaufman, but I found this outing easier to follow than 'Being John Malkovich' and more interesting than 'Adaptation'. I guess at it's core Eternal Sunshine is a love story, but it's so unconventional and smartly written that it doesn't have the real slow parts a lot of love stories tend to have these days. Impress your girlfriends and pick it up, you won't have to hang you head in shame when it's all over .

Truman & MotM featured Jim Carrey doing his usual wacky stuff, but in a dramatic situation. Eternal Sunshine had Jim Carrey ACTING. He wasn't "Jim Carrey being...", he was a character doing stuff.
If he doesn't get an Oscar nomination, I will cry.

What I found surprising in the commercials for the DVD release is the emphasis on it being a "smart comedy". I didn't think of it as a comedy at all. | oldschoolhero

Once upon a time in China, some believe, around the year one double-ought three, head priest of the White Lotus Clan, Pai Mei was walking down the road, contemplating whatever it is that a man of Pai Mei's infinite power contemplates - which is another way of saying "who knows" - when a Shaolin monk appeared, traveling in the opposite direction. As the monk and the priest crossed paths, Pai Mei, in a practically unfathomable display of generosity, gave the monk the slightest of nods. The nod was not returned. Now was it the intention of the Shaolin monk to insult Pai Mei or did he just fail to see the generous social gesture? The motives of the monk remain unknown. What is known, are the consequences. The next morning Pai Mei appeared at the Shaolin Temple and demanded of the Temple's head abbot that he offer Pai Mei his neck to repay the insult. The Abbot at first tried to console Pai Mei, only to find Pai Mei was inconsolable. So began the massacre of the Shaolin Temple and all 60 of the monks inside at the fists of the White Lotus. And so began the legend of Pai Mei's five point palm exploding heart technique. | Dagent913

Just an awesome movie, which awesomness gets magnified when you realize that very few studio movies ever try to be more than a way to make cash. Focus Films is starting to build a name for themselves.

I am a Jim Carrey fan, but his dramatic roles are amazing. Now he has two of the best movies that I have ever seen (this and The Truman Show).
Kate Winslet deserves a bunch of credit as well. She does create a character that is likable. Mark Ruffalo is an amazing actor.

Damn straight. Y'know how many movies he's been in in the last three years? 10. [The Last Castle, XX/XY, Windtalkers, My Life Without Me, View From The Top, In The Cut, We Don't Live Here Anymore, Eternal Sunshine, 13 Going On 30 AND Collateral.
He is a MACHINE. Granted, only 4 of those movies were good...but heck, that's a pretty good percentage all things considered.

Carrey and Winslet both gave magnificent performances, and everything from the direction to the editing to the music was extremely well done. nice to see that other people feel the same way (where i live the girl at the movie store who previously worked at a movie theatre and "knew movies" had never even heard of this, for shame) | Mr Heel II

For the casual movie goer, this thing can come off as a big mess that ties together beautifully by the end. But a lot of people just won't have the patience to get that far.
Not my favorite of the year ("Napoleon Dynamite" gets that nod), but one of my tops. | Oliver

Mark kicked ass; his work in "13 Going on 30" made the movie so incredible.
I didn't know he was in Eternal Sunshine; that certainly inspires me to pick it up now.
