I'm kinda kidding with the thread title, actually. Interestingly, the social climate may end up "overcorrecting" the problems people saw arising from the Supreme Court decision regarding eminent domain.,,SB112301915571102998-hjH49jIQrC9bmanRCdhh2F8QVEk_20060802,00.html?mod=tff_main_tff_top

I hope that link works, but I think it's only good for Tuesday. Oh! There's also a reprint at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette site (

I think it's that 89-8 poll that really got to me, but maybe that just says more about the poll than about the climate...?

I think severe limits on eminent domain are warranted. Here's the poll from the University mentioned:

Look, some of the eminent domain issues are ok - an unused vacant lot or a closed casket factory. But the problem is that some authorities having jurisdiction are using this decision to take liberties with people's liberties. Why should, say, IBM, be able to get 10 houses condemned that had people living in them so that they can expend their manufacturing capability? But they have done it.

It might be easier for companies to push for eminent domain acquisitions if the news media would educate instead of inflame over the issue. But they don't know the difference between a capitalist enterprise that provides jobs from taking over a dump that refuses to sell and a rich guy trying to get a widow's house so he can build a mondo-Deco art house that will be big on the NEA grant circuit.

And of course, the problem with the recent decisions is that there is no legal difference either.

It's Clobberin' Time!

To agree with Moe, look at the countries in Europe that are supporting the US (outside of Britain). These countries were either under the control of Soviet puppet governments (Eastern Europe), or Fascists (Spain, Portugal, and Italy).
