Kevin Kelly: "Mr. Austin, would you like to comment on Wade Keller's Take that endorsing the XFL hurts your anti-authority character?"
Steve Austin: "Oh shit, he actually said that? I thought the boys in the back were ribbing me!"
Kelly: "No, he really said that. Did they tell you the part about you sitting in the stands, looking all skeptical?"
Austin: "AHAHAHAHAHAHA. Yeah... oh man that was too much."| Promote this thread! | | John Orquiola

Like me, it's best to pretend the last 22 years never happened. I hope the "old" Eddie appears. If not, I'd suggest playing Coming to America in between the awards being given out.

And if Ricky Gervais and James Franco were told to tone down their routines and got fired from their hosting gigs for not doing so, how in the world does anyone think Eddie won't get neutered with his jokes? I guarantee you that one of two things will happen: Either he tries some jokes that will bomb badly for him because people will see he's rusty from not doing stand up for so long or the censors will cut him down to where he'll be a very boring host and everyone will be disappointed yet again with the Oscars. Either way, it will suck yet again. They had a pretty good host with Gervais and they screwed it up badly; I have no hope for Murphy.

A lot will depend on the quality of the writing and Eddie's willingness to listen to good ideas.
(I was at a screening for Burke and Hare when John Landis explained why Beverly Hills Cop 3 was a catastrophe, the script was terrible, but then so was the script for Beverly Cops 1 and 2. The difference was on the first two films, Eddy was willing and eager to be funny. On the third one he wanted to be A SERIOUS ACTOR.)

Originally posted by supersalvadoran And if Ricky Gervais and James Franco were told to tone down their routines and got fired from their hosting gigs for not doing so
1) Franco is edgy? He performed edgy material? He WROTE edgy material? Vilanch & crew wrote all that shitty material...which he delivered as badly as it was written.
2) Ricky was invited to host the Globes again. Not "fired" (you can't be fired from a one-time gig if you're still there at the end of the one broadcast you were hired to do), in fact the complete opposite.

I wouldn't call him 'edgy' anywhere near like Eddie was on Raw. But with him dressing in drag and acting aloof or 'high' depending on what you believe, he definitely wasn't a conventional host. Maybe edgy isn't the exact right word, but being 'different' for a host isn't going to be acceptable for the producers. My point being is not that Eddie Murphy isn't still funny or can't be funny, but that the type of humor a lot of us want to see from him hasn't been used by him for a long time and I don't see the Oscars allowing him free reign to do those jokes. So I think he'll be stuck doing a regular hosting gig and people will be unhappy with it because they'll be expecting much more from him.

In fact, if you believe Garvais, he was invited to host for a third time, so I'll give you credit for that. But from what I understood in reading articles after the Golden Globes this year, he pissed off so many people that he was cut off mid-ceremony and was made persona non grata. So who really knows, but they wanted something different, he gave them something different, and they got up in arms because he gave them something different. Funny how that works.
