As part of a charity fundraiser for City Year (cityyear.org), Netscape is auctioning off 226 common account usernames - and thus, (firstname)@netscape.com email addresses. I think they'd only used netscape.net for consumer offerings up to now?
Opening bids are $9.95 each. The current priciest name is - go figure - "john," at $540 (cgi.ebay.com). Considering you get a year of "free" service included with it (value allegedly $119 @ $9.95/mo), it's not THAT much of an investment to get a "prestige" name, I suppose...
If you happen to score one for the minimum bid, it's probably better to think of it as "Buy one month, get eleven free!"
"chris" is currently $55 (cgi.ebay.com), but I already have the prestigious chris@xo.com thanks to working for the company that originally had the domain name before it passed into the current XO's hands. Let me tell you that all having a prestige email address is REALLY good for is collecting staggering amounts of spam from bruteforce attacks. ("christopher" is going for a much more reasonable $11.64 (cgi.ebay.com), in case you weren't bored by now)
Anyway, these auctions end on the morning of the 15th (Thursday).
YOUR Out-Of-Context Quote of Whenever (thanks, MoeGates!): "I wish MY countrymen weren't so uptight about stuff like outdoor marajuana use and casual man-on-man anal love."Son of a whore, mine's going for $61. And to someone who just registered, too. Dope. -_-

john@netscape.com is worth over a thousand smackers...
What kind of a world do we live in...
*Note*--Call me pissed... but darryl@netscape.com wasn't even available...Damn obscure name...ha!
I'd hate to be around "John" if Netscape killed their mail servers or got bought out by someone; or whatever else. There would be pure hell to pay.
But come on....$1000 for a freaking email address? He could have easily gotten a personalized email address for a sliver of that price by registering his own domains, like richmorons.org or whatever.
Chris went for $137.50, finishing #15. (Christopher went for only $32!)
The Top Ten: 1. John - $1025 2. Joe - $500 3. Michael - $255 4. Denise - $231.50 5. Mark - $205 5. Brian - $205 7. Jennifer - $202.50 7. Jason - $202.50 9. Mike - $192.50 10. David - $181.38
Interesting - eight dudes, two chicks.
No names went without a bid - the cheapest names where Margaret and Pamela for $20.50.
