Cantered near New Salem, preliminarily a 5.4. Felt it good here in Champaign, knocked some things off the fridge.

Would rather that not happen again.

Working in New Orleans this week - just talked to Mrs AWA - she said in our place near Louisville doors on cabinets opened, her dresser and the windows creaked and my 18 year old son thought it was very cool.

We'll be back right after order has been restored here in the Omni Center.

It woke up my mom in Dayton. One of the reasons she moved out of California was to get away from earthquakes. :)

Interesting.

Didn't feel anything in Litchfield - or at least not enough to wake me.

When the New Madrid finally decides to dance one of these years Southwestern Illinois is going to RUMBLE.

That one I felt. But I was awake this time.

If that was a four then color me unimp--- no, I'm not finishing that thought.

The Richter scale is logarithmic. A 7 is 10 times stronger than a 6 which is 10 times stronger than a 5 which is 10 times stronger than a 4. So the low number are pretty weak. You need to have a 3.0 to even feel it at all.

Ok, this is clearly my ignorance talking, but let me pose a question. I spent 6 weeks in Champaign and we had a pair of tornado alarms go off, which I'm clearly not used to in Southern California. The first one, we had to evacuate to the parking garage. The second one happened while I was at the bar for my lunch hour and everyone simply shrugged it off and went about their business.

Are earthquakes not as common as tornadoes around those parts?

In the twenty-seven years I've hung around the Prairie State there have been two earthquakes relevant enough to make the news and stick in my memory: today's and one similar to it when I was a wee lad.

There hasn't been a year when I haven't been in a county with a tornado warning (for a legit reason, either a sighting by a spotter or a sharp purple radar hook). Hell, it's already happened in 2008.

The Second alarm may have been on the first Tuesday of the month, which is when they test the sirens.

To echo PeterStork, There was a fairly large earthquake in 1987 (which actually caused the crack in my new house's foundation.) a much more minor quake in 2002 (minor enough that I felt it on the third floor, but it was barely felt across the street by people on the first floor) and the two today (though I swear I felt a shorter tremor about 30 seconds before the larger quake this morning.)

I felt it up here in these parts. I know we're not close enough to railroad tracks for it to have been a train. There's no delivery trucks on our street at that time of day. I checked to make sure it wasn't REALLY windy outside.

Then I thought - I wonder if that was an earthquake, and went back to sleep.

Seriously what the hell is going on? We haven't had any major* kind of quake in almost 6 years, and now suddenly there's five in a week?

*Major meaning above a 3.5, and/or able to be felt here in Champaign, 120 miles way from the epicenter.
