Wow what a deal if true. He will drive for the best owner there is right now. He would be teammates with Jeff Gordon. Talladega fans must be jumping for joy.

I just don't understand this deal - I was so surprised. I thought that Hendrick would be the last choice for Jun - figured Childress was a lock on this.

4 teams per owner next year - right? Where's Casey go? He go to DEI. I hear they need a driver.

It won't be Casey. Kyle Busch is moving on at the end of the year. Rumors are to either DEI or Ginn.

I was thinking Ginn was the logical place for Junior, since they get Hendrick engines, but a LOT of NASCAR insiders have been saying Hendrick all-along.

possible dumb casual NASCAR fan question:

So, what number?

Is there any way of knowing if DEI will hold on to 3, or are things going to progress like that He's Changing His Number! commercial and Dale Jr. will end up 5, 9, or something completely different?

NASCAR "gives" the numbers to the car owners, so Richard Chidress Racing (Dale Sr.'s owner) has the rights to the 3. DEI has the rights to the 8, so either Hendrick would have to work something out with DEI or the more likely scenario is Junior drives the 5 or Casey Mears moves to the 5 with Junior in the 25.

Yeah. I didn't know Busch was unsigned. I believe he's going to be a big catch for whoever gets him. Kid can drive, just needs to settle down a tad.

I figure DEI and Hendrick work a trade for the 8 for the 5 maybe or June can drive the 5 - won't be bad company to be in the 5 - Texas Terry did ok in it.

As big a question as the number is the whole sponsor issue.

Hendrick is tied into contracts with their 4 main sponsors for at least 1 more year (could be more). Budweiser has a contract with JR. I'm sure Bud would prefer that JR. be driving a budweiser car as it would hurt their investment to have him driving something else.

It is going to be a real bidding war to see who gets to splat their logo all over Dale's car. This year has been fun so far and next year is already shaping up to be better.

I heard someone on the radio say that the driver can earn as much as 50% of the profit from sales of souvenirs. Dale Jr. was limited in that regard because they couldn't sell souvenirs with the Bud logo to children. A switch to a more all-ages company could therefore be very lucrative for him.

I can't find last year, but as of 2004, Junebug was the highest endorsement driver - made more than any other - over 13 million in addition to his driver winnings.

I figure he'll stay with Bud. But, then, I thought he'd go with RCR.

With all due respect, Dale Jr. isnt' an incredible, brilliant driver...I mean, if you look past all the hype of his signing...he's nowhere in the league of say...Johnson or Gordon. If they're bidding on Earnhardt for Earnhardt's sake (because of the love of his dad) then I think they should rethink things.

Will the new team help him? Who's to say. I'm tempted to say no, but maybe a change of environment would be good for him.

Also, what's going to happen with DEI? And for that matter, Busch?

I'm going to have to COMPLETELY disagree. It's easy to forget this because he's struggled the last two years, but he's got 17 wins, which is the fourth-most since his rookie year and almost all of them came before 2004, when DEI's performance started to suffer. He almost won the 2004 Nextel Cup, when he had six wins and was leading the points until he swore in Victory Lane in Talladega (which was stupid).

It's so funny that people like to tear down Junior's driving ability because they like Gordon, or vice-versa. There is an elite class of Cup driver, and those guys are both near the top.

Jimmie Johnson was a middle-of-the-pack Busch driver before he got into a Hendrick seat, and look what he's done. Junior is a two-time Busch champion and Daytona 500 winner, what do you think HE is going to do?

I don't think he will win the championship next year, but I would bet he will in 2009.

I hope that is the case, but it sounds like Bud's contract is with DEI and it's for one more year, so that could be problematic. The buzz is that it's going to be Mountain Dew.
