Orlando Magic's Dwight Howard to have back surgery, miss rest of season
Orlando Magic center Dwight Howard will undergo back surgery on Friday morning in Los Angeles to repair a herniated disk, effectively ending his season and eliminating him from participation in the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, Howard's agent said on Thursday night.
"It hurts (emotionally)," Howard told ESPN the Magazine's Chris Broussard. "That's the first thing -- it hurts. And then with people saying and thinking I'm quitting on my team. This is a real issue. I tried to play through it and it just made my back worse."
Now where would people get the crazy idea that Dwight Howard is quitting on his team?
Dwight Howard does not want to set foot on the court again this season for the Orlando Magic if Stan Van Gundy remains the team's head coach, WKMG-TV reported.
NBA and Magic sources told the station Howard is still upset about Van Gundy telling reporters he went to the team's front office asking for the 52-year-old coach to be given the boot.
Oh, right!
What a douche. He deserves any and all ill will directed at him, especially from Magic fans.

I'm not doubting the existence or the severity of the injury. But now Howard's starting to lament that people think he's quitting. Honestly, if Howard doesn't spend this entire season courting other teams, undermining his team, and being a passive-aggressive jerk, then that never becomes an issue. He brought all of this on himself and deserves any and all scrutiny he gets.
Considering that Stan Van Gundy had Orlando as a top 4 team in the East, in spite of everything, before the Howard circus REALLY took over at the trade deadline, I'd say he deserves an extension.

Orlando is going to have to get rid of both these guys and they will both do well somewhere else. I would get rid of Otis Smith first though. How he has held the job this long is a mystery of Isiah proportions.

Why not? If you thought you should be getting paid to be in the Olympics (like Dwyane Wade does), embellishing an injury to take yourself out of them seems like a perfectly acceptable suspicion to have of Howard.
Especially if what Van Gundy said about Howard going behind his back to ask Magic execs to fire him is true.

If Howard was having his knee scoped or having surgery on a finger on his non-shooting hand, the suspicion really would be there. However, i don't think anyone voluntarily has back surgery to screw a coach over. |
