I'm watching BOTTOM for the 800 time and drinking a BBBCS before I drink another (I'm assuming) mindcrushing double deuce of Smuttynose Barleywine Ale. And we're DONE.
God, the Smuttynose brings the hops. I haven't even dranken any of it yet and I can taste them. God, this is kinda vile. Not actually vile PER SE. It's like alcohol drenched lemonade- so it's kinda gross. God. It's like they added a pound of Sweet N Low to the brewing wort. Don't like it. Nope. Fuck it. It's vile.

Being on a particularly tight budget, I haven't been sampling as many brews as I'd like lately, including anything from Smuttynose. Most recently, I've been on a Gritty McDuff's kick - I've had the Bitters and the Pale Ale, both of which I'd highly recommend. Harpoon's IPA has a slightly bitter hoppiness that just turns me off, but Gritty's was mind-blowing. Awesome finish, and not overwhelmingly hoppy. I find the overhopping just assaults the senses - starts with the nose, then just focuses on one part of the pallete. A good beer is, for lack of a better and less innuendo-laden term, a full mouth experience.
All that said, would you recommed anything from Smuttynose? It's a brewery with a fair reputation that my local guy carries, so I'm thinking of picking up a six next time I get paid. It's that, or drive to LUKE's LIQUORS in nearby Rockland. (Which carries, among others, a past booze review beer, in Fin du Monde [further aside: do you generally find that stuff fresh when you buy it in the 'states?])

I like their Robust Porter a whole whole bunch and I'll crack the sampler open tonight or tomorrow night and review the rest. Definately avoid their Barleywine. It is poo.
(God, I couldn't find a double duece La Fin Du Monde yesterday. They just had the 12 ounce singles so I didn't buy any. I've had it in Ottawa and I've had it in Richmond and it tastes the same to me)
