"FOCK IT: Dustin Hoffman set to play Ben Stiller's dad in Meet the Fockers, the sequel to the 2000 comedy hit Meet the Parents. Robert De Niro, Blythe Danner and Teri Polo also return in their original roles."
So much for my hopes of getting Jerry Stiller play the dad ...

And another great dramatic actor craps all over his legacy, following in the footsteps of De Niro.

I think that happened after he signed on to play Captain Hook over a decade ago.

Meet The Parents, unlike everything else DeNiro's done in the last ten years, was actually a pretty good film, which means the chances for the sequel are good too. Ol' Bobby may have pissed away his past o other projects, but just because Big Dust decides to come along on one of his better outings doesn't mean the stink's gonna rub off on him. And yes, while Hook fell flat, Hoffman-as-Hook RULED.

I hated Meet the Parents.
It should have been called, How Many Ways Can We Write Asinine and Convenient Situations That Make Ben Stiller Even More Unfunny?
Add in Owen "Can't Act His Way Out of a Nut Sack" Wilson and you should have a sequel called Bucket of Suck
If Ben Stiller, Owen and Luke Wilson all died in some horrible industrial accident (involving something caustic), I don't think I'll be too concerned about it.
IMO. :D

| #7 Posted on 21.1.04 2022.20 | Instant Rating: 5.96 | I'll use the arguable jumping points for both Hoffman & DeNiro: Hook for Hoffman & DeNiro's first major comedic movie, Analyze This.
Robert DeNiro's Awards: PRE-ANALYZE THIS: Oscar nominations in 1975, 1977, 1979, 1981, 1991 & 1992 (including wins in 1975 & 1981) Golden Globe nominations 1977, 1978, 1979, 1981, 1989 & 1992 (including the win in 1981) 5 MTV Movie Award nominations ANALYZE THIS: Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy POST-ANALYZE THIS: Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy in 2001 for Meet the Parents 2 MTV Movie Award nominations, including a win for Best Line From A Movie
Dustin Hoffman's Awards: PRE-HOOK: Oscar nominations in 1968, 1970, 1975, 1980, 1983 & 1989 (including wins in 1980 & 1989) Golden Globe nominations in 1968 (two), 1970 (two), 1975, 1977, 1980, 1983, 1986 & 1992 (including five wins) HOOK: Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy POST-HOOK: Oscar nomination in 1998 Golden Globe nomination in 1998, and the illustrious Cecil B. DeMille Award in 1997
I think it's arguable that Hoffman might have the same lack of success after delving into comedic acting than De Niro did, but Hoffman's still doing good work after going into comedies...as long as he isn't making an ASS of himself (does Rocky & Bullwinkle ring a bell?)

| #9 Posted on 21.1.04 2108.05 | Instant Rating: 7.13 | To be fair though, in your comparisons, Analyze This was released in 1999 (~ five years ago), whereas Hook was released in 1991* (~ thirteen years ago). Given that, it would make sense that Hoffman would have had more accolades since Hook compared to De Niro since AT. Let's see...
Average # of Accolades/year:
De Niro:
Pre AT: 6 Oscar Noms + 2 wins + 6 Globe Noms + 1 win + 5 MTV noms = 14 Number of years = 1999 - 1975 = 24. Ratio = 14/24 = .583
Post AT: 2 Globe Noms (AT + MtP) + 2 MTV Noms = 4 Number of years = 2004 - 1999 = 5 Ratio = 4/5 = .800
Hoffman:
Pre Hook:
6 Oscar Noms + 2 wins + 10 Globe Noms + 5 wins = 23 Number of years = 1991* - 1968 = 23 years Ratio = 23/23 = 1.00
Post Hook:
1 Globe Nom (for Hook) + 1 Oscar Nom + 1 Globe Nom + DeMille = 4 Years = 2004 - 1991* = 13 Ratio = 4/13 = .308
If anything, the argument can be made that while Hook killed Hoffman's career, De Niro's riding higher than ever.
*According to this (imdb.com), Hook was released in 1991. You list some of Hoffman's pre-Hook accolades as 1992. I counted them as pre-Hook for my calculations (all based off the stats provided). Do with this what you may.

So I'm guessing that you're gonna be first in line to see the Ben Stiller/Owen Wilson remake of Starky & Hutch when it hits theaters.

I don't know...Snoop Dogg as Huggy Bear sounds pretty cool. And it's hard to go wrong with Vince Vaugn. Plus Juliette Lewis and Will Ferrell. So the supporting cast doesn't sound too horrible.
But if it had a cameo of Samuel L. Jackson as Shaft (One bad mutha...), then I think I may be able to tolerate it.
Plus the Director is the guy who directed Old School and that was allright I guess.
Ohh! Maybe they will both get shot and then I can cheer. That makes me feel warm and fuzzy.
