Honestly the more I think about this the more strongly I feel that it should be watched 1-6. I think 1-3 do a good job of explaining a lot of what is talked about in 4-6. Like the clone wars and who the jedi were, what the dark side is all about and such.
When I saw 4-6 I knew Luke was the hero and was going to win in the end. Maybe if I had known the full story of his father I would have had doubts about Luke as well going through his story. Being able to see others turned to the dark side and learn more about the differences could have a nice impact on wondering what Luke would do because I just never had any doubt that he wouldn't turn at the time. Also you hear nothing about the prophecy in 4-6 and I think that's good knowledge going into those as well.
I don't buy that you don't get the concept of the Force in 1-3, as in 1 itself you have a better definition of what The Force is than any of the 4-6 movies. Had you ever heard of a metachlorians, or however that's spelled, before 1? No, I don't think you would be lost at all watching 1-3 first, in fact I think you'd be better off. Just my opinion.
As I was 21 when Star Wars came out in 1977 (first date with my wife), watch 4-6 and 1-3 only if you are desperate. The magic of the 4-6 is just so diminished by the last three (one was okay). The effects are superior in the last three but part of the charm of the first three released is just gone. Lucas actually started to believe his own press and 1-3 are just so deadly serious.
Get 4-6 deeply implanted in your brain, then 1-3 if you must.
As an oldtimer like Dr. Dirt, I watched 4-6 when they didn't have Episode Numbers.
I saw the original trilogy in the theater and I watch them when they show up on television. I have never watched nor had the inclination to watch the second set of movies and I feel like my life is still pretty full. :)

I am with you on this one Pieman. I saw all three in the theatre and on video and feel that is enough. The only reason I ever wanted to see the second set was because of my massive crush on Natalie Portman. But even that could not get me to see it. And really, it never sounded like I missed anyhtign either as I always hear what a dissappointment they were.
Fry crack corn and I don't care Leela crack corn I still don't care Bender crack corn and he is great Take that you stupid corn!

Will do. At this point, I have seen "Star Wars" and "The Empire Strikes Back". I plan to watch "Return of the Jedi" today or tomorrow. I'll let you know my thoughts on all three at that time.
For now, I never really realized how many pop culture references I have heard and used but never really knew where they came from. Or, if I knew where, I didn't know the context.
Now that you've seen Star Wars, you should know that at the end of the Cantina scene between Han/Greedo, Han originally shoots first ("Yes, I'll bet you have" *BLAM*, dead Greedo). Lucas went back & changed it so Han shoots only after Greedo squeezes off a shot, I guess to make him more of a "good guy", which wasn't really his character at that point. Han was a scoundrel, selfish, and impulsive (see Han firing his blaster after jumping into the garbage smasher), and realistically wouldn't have sat around waiting for someone to fire at him after getting a blaster shoved in his face.
Plus, it's just so much cooler when Han shoots first.
Well, I finished the first three movies, or is that that the last three movies. Let’s just say that I watched Star Wars thru Return of the Jedi. I watched them on a 50’ DLP set with a good surround sound system. Not exactly a movie theater, but as close as I can do at home.
Of course I couldn’t go into this completely spoiler free; I mean I have lived in human society for the last 30 years. So I wasn’t shocked to find out that Luke is the son of Vader, etc. I also had the advantage of being able to view them a day or so apart. I didn’t have to wait the years between them that the original viewers had to (although that might have been an interesting experiment).
Of the three, I think my favorite is Return of the Jedi. But, it wouldn’t have been what it was without the buildup from the first two, which were also superior films. I was sucked into the story right away. I liked the characters immediately. And of course, the action and the special effects were outstanding. Each movie left me wanting more; I couldn’t wait to see what would happen next. And despite what some of the previous posters have said, I do look forward to seeing the prequels to find out how these characters got to were they were at the beginning of the trilogy. I really appreciated the way the characters grew and evolved from the beginning to the end, especially Han and Luke.
Once I finished, I did go to the internet to find what was added/altered from what I saw and what was originally released. I really don’t think that there was anything done that would have affected my enjoyment one way or the other. Who shot first did not change the way that I viewed the character of Han Solo. The one change that really kind of bugged me was at the end of Jedi where Luke saw Kenobi, Yoda, and Anakin; the Anakin was obviously from the prequels (Hayden Christiansen) and not the unmasked Vader. This seemed a little much. Having said that, if someone told me that they were re-releasing Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan with changes and additions, I would probably go medieval on somebody’s ass.
You can sarcastically say: "everybody dies" as a spoiler and you wouldn't be far from the truth. The series ends just when I was finally beginning to understand what Chibs was saying.
