| #1 Posted on 23.8.02 1559.31 | I am deciding between getting DSL internet through my phone company and keeping my cable modem through the cable company. It is $20 cheaper per month for the DSL. Has anyone tried both? Is the DSL just as fast or at least comparable to the cable modem? Also, the hub my roommate and I use to share the cable modem is broken, but our landlord put DSL jacks into each room, so that wouldn't be a problem with the DSL. What are your preferences?

| #2 Posted on 23.8.02 1604.31 | Both are permanent connections and both are pretty quick, so that's a plus for both. Really, it depends less upon the type of connection than it does the equipment you have to buy (DSL modem cards vs. cable modems/ethernet cards), the upload/download speeds (some companies will cap them or uncap them depending upon what you pay and will advertise the different levels, & you can go to toast.net to see what kind of throughput you have compared to what you should have), and the kind of customer service you get when something goes wrong. I wouldn't worry so much about which one to choose between as I would worry about people who've had very bad experiences dealing with certain companies. If you have to be on the phone to them repeatedly about getting the service up, or you have to talk to 4 different people to get the same problem straightened out over and over, it becomes too much of an annoyance. If there were some competition in my area, I probably would have looked into it.

In other news, I won't be posting to the board before 7 pm most days, so if you have questions for me, just be patient. As far as I know I can still moderate and read the board from work, but posting in a forum appears to be off limits at this time.
Eh. Life sucks some times - but then I think about all of the benefits of my job, and I am definitely not going to rock the boat and risk losing them.

| #8 Posted on 23.8.02 2219.53 | Instant Rating: 4.05 | i paid $49.95 / month for earthlink DSL and got 800 down and 256 up
i now have Comcast Cable modem because when i moved, it was to a house that would get 150 down dsl AT BEST...
i now get for $39.95 1000 down but only 150 up at best...but that seems to depend on net traffic, because sometimes i get the 512 up that they "promised" me...

| #9 Posted on 24.8.02 0737.44 | If you do lots of uploading (like I do), cable is the way to go. I've had cable for almost two years now and I absolutely love it. I get great service, and best of all, I don't have to deal with the phone company.

| #10 Posted on 24.8.02 1304.08 | Instant Rating: 7.46 | It really all depends on the offering in your particular part of the world.
Here in Halifax, where broadband started early and there was significant competition, standard DSL service is 1.5Megabit down and 1Megabit up. This is a new restriction, however, as it used to be 3Megabit down and 1Megabit up. We pay CDN$40/month for this, which is something like 52 cents US or something The cable company's offering is similar, but they don't promise any kind of numbers (most people get similar to what they'd get from DSL, hence competition is preserved).
Also, a fundamental difference between DSL and cable is that cable is a less secure environment (everybody on your cable loop is on your local ethernet segment and can hence sniff your traffic). For the same reasons, service can get slow when lots of people on your local cable loop are using it at the same time (unless you've got a really good cable provider who's upgraded their loop and their routers).
I'm lucky: we got the digital TV service over DSL from the phone company. When the TVs in the house are both off we get about 5MB down. From a site that can fill that pipe, that means I see about 640kb/sec...whole cds only take about 20 minutes...

This is so true. I have cable and I live downtown. My connection is fast on evenings and weekends, but when all the suits log on at work during the day, it slows to a crawl. For those who live in the suburbs I think the reverse is true.
I've been thinking about switching to DSL for a few months now (every time I go link dead on Everquest actually), and if it's cheaper for you, I say give the phone company a try.

| #13 Posted on 24.8.02 1932.12 | Instant Rating: 4.05 | i do have to add that while i had Earthlink, my DSL would go down frequently...like, 2-3 times a week...
i've only had 1 outage in 4 months with my cable modem, and that's because there is some major construction going on near by, and they had to move a whole bunch of lines [my neighborhood is old, and the cable lines are above ground.]
