Since July (when I moved to Fitchburg), I've been having some serious problems with my Verizon DSL connection. The connection keeps cutting out, usually at the most inopportune of times. What's happening is that the "Power" and "Ready" lights on my Westell WireSpeed modem are all glowing a constant green, but the "Ethernet" light has become the blinking green light of death. I hypothesized that it was a problem on my end and not Verizon's, but after looking for Ethernet cards and cables at bestbuy.com, I've discovered that I really have no clue what I'm doing. The obvious answer (I think) is to just switch to Comcast's cable service, but that's a wee bit more expensive than I can handle right now. Any other suggestions?

I work for a cable company, so answer #1 is that you should switch to a cable modem and get rid of DSL.

Answer #2 is that you should call your DSL support line and stay on the line until you understand why they say your DSL isn't working and they have a solution that fixes your problem. If they can't fix it, see answer #1.

Is cable actually better than DSL?

We have cable here at the house, and it's VERY unstable. The only reason we stick with it is because we keep getting a better deal when we re-up... but the bloody thing goes down about once a week,

We've replaced the router, the switch, and some of the CAT5 - and while ithas gotten much better, it still have major problems.

I think it's better, yes. Generally you can get faster connection speeds for the same price. Quality of anything varies from provider to provider.

You didn't mention changing the modem out. Do you ever get a blinking cable light on the modem? If so, you may have a signal problem to the modem. If it is on a splitter with something else, try taking it off of the splitter (especially if you put the splitter in yourself to get cable TV to a TV tuner card in your PC).

I'm retired from the troubleshooting game, though. The best I can recommend is that you take some notes about what kind of problems you've had and make sure that you give the tech on the other side of the phone all of the information that you have before you let them have you start troubleshooting.

I'd get them to swap the modem out for you, and to also check the filters and things coming into the house. I've had many problems with my cable modem, but they've all been able to be resolved by one or the other.

I ask because they kept telling us it wasn't their fault, and that the modem was fine...

Been there, done that. And one of the reasons I've suggested going DSL is the DSL customer service can't be worse than what we've got now... but price won out in the end.

If fairness to you, I don't think you work for the company that services Santa Barbara County.

Well, there is always the possibility that it ISN'T their fault.

Send me a private message with more details and I'll see if I can help you out.

So basically my options are:

1. Move
2. Switch to cable
3. Call Verizon Tech Support (who when last I called gave me 20 different answers from 13 different people, 3 of which were in North America)

Does the Ethernet light mean anything? Could the problem be on my end and not theirs?

I installed my Dad's DSL connection on his IMac a few weekends ago, and the only problem we saw was when the Ethernet light didn't light up at all. I don't know what he did - the night before the connection was working fine, the next morning he mucked around and it didn't work/turn on at all. After basically trying a re-install of the DSL software, the connection was working again. IIRC, it appeared that the Ethernet light blinked somewhat, even while the connection worked.

Hope that helps at least a little!

It's always a possibility that the problem is on your end. Do you have access to another PC to test the connection?

I'm on cable myself and love it. (cha-ching! Another plug for you Guru.)

But...I've done quite a bit of troubleshooting for my wifes relatives and their DSL connections. Her one cousin had a problem similar to yours. It ended up being the filters on the phone lines. One of them was defective.

We replaced it with a new filter, and voila! No problems.

Just thought I'd throw out a potentially simple solution for you. Good luck!

Oh that wasn't the whole reason. He was just downright stupidly insulting to me in many posts and IMs right afterward. Still, logging on to a board to brag about stealing, well, it's pretty damn dumb.
