At least no one can cry fix on the #1 pick. The Rangers got 16. And Tampa Bay got the pick they should have gotten as defending Cup Champs.

Winners:
Half the Canadian franchises-Montreal, Ottawa, and Vancouver all get picks in the Top 10, even with only 1 ball in play.
Pittsburgh-#1 Pick=Winner

Losers:
The other Canadian franchises-Edmenton and Calgary are the lowest picks for teams with 2 balls in play. Consider that Calgary is 21 picks after Montreal, even though they had twice the chance Montreal did.
New York Rangers-the lowest pick for any of the teams with 3 balls.

I think the Penguins just got their new arena. Gee, do you think that Mario might stick around for a couple more years, back problems be damned?

"You can look the other way once, and it's no big deal, except it makes it easier for you to compromise the next time, and pretty soon that's all your doing; compromising, because that's the way you think things are done. Canes and Wild in the top five!

This is supposed to be a good draft overall, right?

Exactly the response I, along with about ten of my friends who called me in a 5 minute span had. I am numb, as (potentially) good things like this have never really happened since I've been old enough to actively follow my hometown teams.

I know right? The Penguin collapse and selling off of everybody was especially hard since our dozen-or-so consecutive playoff appearances had given me the assumption that the playoffs were a birthright.

Is it wrong that I still wish we had gotten to draft Alexander Ovechkin to complete the Triforce of Courage with Fleury and Sycho Sid? I guess Malkin is still supposed to be really good, but that would've been something. It was all part of my MASTER PLAN.

I guess there's still a chance, however slim, that Crosby will end up somewhere else, but it'll have to be Pittsburgh picks him and deals him in a major trade. (No offence to Shapiro -- hey, I've got family in Oil City -- but Pittsburgh's not where I wanted to see him go).

Count me among those who believe that Crosby's the real deal; I've not seen him live, but from what I have seen, he sees the ice better than anyone since Gretzky, period (Lemieux had possibly the best "offensive" vision ever, but Gretzky's all-round view of the game is as yet unmatched). I kinda wanted to see Crosby go to a young team like Atlanta or Minnesota or Tampa Bay. As much as I was never really a big Edmonton fan, The rise of the upstart Oilers with Gretzky at their core remains the most compelling period in the NHL of my lifetime. Maybe it's not even possible in the modern era, but I'd love to see something similar happen again.

This is actually supposed to be one of the deepest drafts in known memory, with no less than four or five guys who should've been #1 if it wasn't for that Crosby fella.

Kudos to the Pens, who now have a young goalie who will only improve, a Living Legend, The Next One, a SHITLOAD of cap space to get some support around them, PLUS a uber smart GM whose totally used to working on no budget who now has to spend at least 16 million to meet the BOTTEM of the cap barrel. Things are looking up for the Penguins and their fans, which I say is about damn time, cause Penguin fans are amoung some of the best around.

As for the rest of the draft, no complaints from this end, I can settle with the #5 pick, without question (especially in this draft). With this we can get ourselves either a power-forward or a goalscorer with size (there is a difference between the two). Just gotta sign Theo and we'll be in good shape to make a run at a couple of players.

I'm liking this year a fair bit.

Rumor has it that Ovechkin isn't playing as well as the Caps had hoped he would overseas, but who cares anyway? Ovechkin and Malkin are supposed to be star-quality players, and everything I've heard about Crosby dictates that he will transcend the game. Malkin will make a fine sidekick to the Mario/Sydney monster, as will Kovalev (I hope).

Justin, don't forget my old school chum Ryan Stone (who LIT IT UP last year in the WHL), who's also headed to Steeltown next season.

Ryan Malone's a damn fine player as well, if they can just find him some competent linemates, I think the Pens will surprise a lot of people...

Needless to say, I'm excited for the future of this team.

I said Boston/San Jose in the final before the playoffs (although I secretly hoped for Buffalo/Phoenix), so I should stick with that, but I think Vancouver is picking up steam. I have no read on the Lightning whatsoever. Argh... Canucks in 6 Bruins in 6
