So let me get this straight: "The Canadian Way" is to look somebody straight in the eye, THEN sucker punch them?

No, he said if you have a beef with someone in hockey and you want to fight, then fight face to face, don't sneak up and sucker punch someone.

You know, how 99% of hockey fights go.

Say that to my face, IncredibleHeelHeat! I'm looking for a fight, the Canadian Way!

When I heard Don say that on Saturday night, I knew he'd get some grief.

Actually, Don Cherry is an idiot who propagates a brand of play that single-handedly sets back Canadian hockey about 20 years. Physical play only became the 'Canadian way' after the Russians kicked our asses in the first two games of the Summit Series (which we then only won after turning all cheap).

I highly recommend you guys check out Michael Farber's article in this week's Sports Illustrated covering the Bertuzzi hit, as well as the Ottawa-Philadelphia situations the past little while. Basically, he makes a great argument (with good, supporting reasons) about why fighting in hockey should be canned, just like in other sports.

There's also a sub-article there that gave a scary stat: The NHL All-Star Game drew a 1.8 rating in the US (on ABC), which was lower than an Arena Football game played at the same time on NBC. Wonder if the XFL could outdraw the NHL if it was still around today?

So the Maple Leafs get a huge win over Colorado last night and I eagerly go to the recap on Yahoo Sports.

They spend the first half of the article describing a slash by Wade Belak on an Avs player before even getting to the game itself. Yeesh, and you wonder why Americans don't watch hockey? I totally agree that stickwork should be utterly eliminated from hockey, but for the media to focus on every incident from now on is a little silly.

Watch one European hockey game without fighting. It is the absolute most violent game you will ever see in your life. The amount of dangerous and flagrant high sticking, spearing, slashing, etc that goes on in that game is appalling. It happens because there is no fighting. The one difference between hockey and other sports is that you're CARRYING A WEAPON! That's why fighting has to be in there, to police the players from using that weapon.

Everyone always points to the Olympics and says SEE THERE WAS NO FIGHTING THERE AND IT WAS GREAT! That's the most baseless argument I've ever heard. The Olympics was a handful of games between the very top skilled players in the world with huge stakes. It wasn't an 82 game regular season grind where the vast majority of the players didn't even play in the Olympics. It's apples and oranges. There's really no fighting in the Playoffs either unless someone gets out of line with their stick or a check.

Fine, there is that difference between hockey and other team sports. BUT, and this is my big question, why is there that mentality of using a stick as a weapon? My argument earlier was a bit weak, fine, but why has there ALWAYS been that mentality?

I mean, in the NFL, there's been more than one case of a player spearing another (a player tackling another helmet-first). How come you never hear from the NFL, "Well, after Ray Lewis speared Peyton Manning today, he better watch his back for the rematch!" You hear that a LOT in the NHL, and it's all I've been hearing about with regards to the Flyers here in Ottawa. Don't get me wrong, a LOT of that's the media's fault, but there's far too much of a revenge mentality.

Don't get me wrong, I love hockey, and I'm not trying to trash it. I just think little things like that can be improved. Sure, fighting polices the goons who use their sticks as weapons, but if the referees grew some balls themselves, shouldn't they be able to do that?
