According to news reports and the syndicated Don & Mike Show, Don's wife and frequent show guest Freda died last night following a car crash in Ocean City, Maryland, on Route 90. The current show (Monday, July 11) is dedicated to memories of Freda and letting listeners know what happened.

That's terrible.
Must be awkward on a show so irreverant and with such a wise-guy, sarcastic, we'll make fun of anything tone. I hope the callers are being respectful anyway.

The ones making it to the air are very respectful and solemn and appreciative of Freda's contributions. It's not a fun show to listen to, but Mike is handing it like a consummate professional. Doing an outstanding job of speaking off the cuff to fill the airtime.

In a rare display of class (and I speak as a fan who doesn't often want them to display any class), Anthony and Jim Norton from O&A have come down hard on message-board fans teeing off on their rival show's loss, and have stated openly that they have no intentions of making fun of it on the air or off.

We'll see how long it lasts, but it's a respectful little truce.

I have listened to the Don and Mike Show for the last 19 years. Freda was always an integral part of the show even though she was never officially an on-air personality. She will be missed, especially by her family.

Of note for DC-based D&M fans who listened to them since the mid 1980s, their former news man David Haines has also passed away this weekend. He had been working for WPGC for the past decade, about.

Geronimo's Wife Killed In Car Crash - 7/11 - Freda Wright-Sorce (left), the wife of WJFK-FM afternoon man Don Geronimo, was killed in an automobile accident on Route 90 near Ocean City MD on Sunday. Apparently, neither her husband, whose real name is Mike Sorce, or their college-age son, Bart, were with her when the tragedy occurred, our sources say. She was traveling westbound on Route 90 at about 2 PM, when a vehicle avoiding an eastbound accident swerved into the westbound lane and hit her Lexus head-on. Mrs. Sorce, who was a frequent presence on her husband's radio show, was taken to University Of Maryland's Shock Trauma Unit in Baltimore where she died. She was 50. Before marrying Geronimo some 23 years ago, the then Freda Wright had worked at a number of radio stations in the DC area, including WASH. The Sorces resided in Great Falls VA and maintained a vacation home in Ocean City. More from Salisbury's WBOC-TV and Radio And Records.....

The Show Must Go On - 7/11 - Don Geronimo's radio partner, Mike O'Meara, and most of the "Don And Mike Show" cast of characters, decided to go ahead and do their WJFK-FM radio show as usual at 3 PM Monday. Geronimo, who lost his wife in a tragic traffic accident on Sunday (see above newsblurb), was not present. But O'Meara said Geronimo had expressed his wishes for his radio family to do the show, which featured "best of" selections involving the interplay between Don and Freda, who was a daily participant (usually via telephone) in the program, which is syndicated across the country. "She was the conscience of this show," O'Meara said. "She was an integral part of this show, and an integral part of all of our lives".....

David Haines Is Dead - 7/11 - DCRTV hears that David Haines (right), who was the newsman on Donnie Simpson's morning WPGC-FM show, passed away on Sunday. He was in his late 50s. Our source says he suffered a pulmonary embolism resulting from cancer treatment. Haines, who had been also dealing with back problems of late, had been with WPGC for 12 years. Before that, he worked at WAVA, providing "burnt toast and coffee time" news and comment for "Don And Mike," when the duo worked at the then contemporary hit station. A tearful Simpson announced the departure of his dear friend at 6:10 Monday morning. He said Haines had been "on vacation" the past few weeks, and had been dealing with poor health for quite a while. "He's in a better place. He's gone home," Simpson proclaimed. "We love you, David Haines." Haines leaves behind a wife and two children. His bio is at wpgc955.com. Haines and his "burnt toast and coffee" was something I sort of grew up on. Every day, it was what was on the bus radio as I went to high school

Geronimo To Return To 106.7 On 8/1 - 7/14 - Mike O'Meara announced on his Thursday WJFK-FM show that his partner Don Geronimo (right) will return to the airwaves on Monday, 8/1. The "Don And Mike" show staff will be off the air tomorrow, Friday, as they attend private funeral services for Don's wife, Freda, who was killed last Sunday in an automobile accident in Ocean City.....
