Matsui signs with the LAAAAA Angels. Sad to see him go, as a Yankees fan. Does this mean Johnny Damon stays put?

So the Angels don't want to re-sign Vlad Guerrero, citing that he's old and broken down, and naturally turn around and sign...someone older and more broken down.

You know, this isn't just a matter of switching parts. Vlad was the face of the franchise for the last five years, playoff performances aside. This will not appease a fanbase that's reeling from Chone Figgins and John Lackey's defection and Vlad's inevitable departure.

What a kick in the nuts this offseason's been so far.

Maybe THAT's what it's all about. Matsui is pretty clutch, and had a terrific post season.

I think it's safe to say that, if they couldn't get it done with the guys they *had*, that LAA management feels the need to rebuild the team. Yeah, Chone, Vlad and Lackey were hugely popular among the Angels' fanbase - but they weren't going to be on the team forever. Chone didn't exactly produce in the post-season (although I will miss him). Lackey was injured for a better part of the year as well.

Vlad is the one I'm most sorry to see potentially leave - but even that's not official yet. From what I've read, Vlad still wants to play right field and isn't entirely resigned to the DH spot, so maybe there's still room for him yet (unless I'm swimming in the longest river in Africa).

Vlad may want to play right field, but I don't think he can anymore. His UZR/150 has been in the negative double-digits for the last four years, which is a real shame given that in his prime in Montreal, Vlad was a defensive monster out in right field.

Guerrero is almost obligated to sign with an American League team so he can DH on an everyday basis. If he signs in the NL, he'll be a butcher in the field and his body might not be able to take it.

Kirk, crackers are a family food. Happy families. Maybe single people eat crackers, we don't know. Frankly, we don't want to know. It's a market we can do without.

I could have sworn Matsui was going to be a Mariner with the large Japanese fanbase and the need for a steady DH with a little power.

In all seriousness, because you know it came up, evidently Matsui and Ichiro aren't exactly what you would call "tight".

Plus the resigning of Griffey already locked up a left handed DH for the Mariners. Wonder if they wish they didn't get sentimental over Griffey early and decided to go after Vlad as a DH.

I'm thinking the Angels might want to use Matsui to pull in the throngs of Japanese tourists that come to Disneyland every summer. They're in Anaheim already with money to spend.

QFT

One of the amazing things about the Expos is that they had 3 guys play right field each of whom had such cannons for arms that they were known to throw out guys at first on what should have been a long single.

I saw Dawson, Walker and Vlad each do that during their careers.

I don't know when you started to watch the Expos but
Ellis Valentine had as strong an arm, if not stronger than those other guys.

BTW, In a game of softball I was playing in I saw a guy get thrown out at first by the left fielder.

Update Wed Sept 29: The Angels and A's are tied. Texas, for all intents and purposes, are pretty much done after dropping the last two to Anaheim. Indeed, it looks like it'll come down to the final three games of the season. Stay tuned.
