Ladies and gentlemen, the following public service message is brought to you by your friends from D-Generation X, who would like to remind each and every one of you that if you're not down with that, we've got two words for you...

As a fan of all of Joss Whedon's work (Angel in particular), my attention was firmly in place the moment the show was announced nearly a year ago, and this date circled on my calendar ever since it was officially scheduled (though the alarm bells definitely went off considering Fox's horrific track record of impatience on Friday night).

Pretty happy with the first episode. Many expressed doubts that Eliza Dushku could handle the weight and range of playing a bunch of different characters, but she was admirably on point tonight. I was most impressed though with Harry Lennix's handler character, and the inner conflict he has to deal with between doing his job and trying to do the right thing (since there will, of course, inevitably be times down the road when Echo won't be allowed to clean up her messes, unlike tonight). His backstory should be interesting to plow through as it's unveiled. (Mr. FBI Guy, at this point, is completely uninteresting, so hopefully they'll get him through the metaphorical door of no return soon so that his character serves a purpose.) Last scene in particular should set up an ongoing plot string nicely, too (which should alleviate people's fears that each episode will be too neatly self-contained).

I really hope the ratings are good and Fox keeps its promise about sincerely giving it a chance to develop, because the potential for balls-to-the-wall awesomeness is certainly there.

Any thoughts from anyone else?

While the switch from Cena to RVD should alleviate some complaints, the inevitability of the belt's return to Cena (note where Summerslam is this year) and the poor initial showing by the new ECW are enough to keep the indicator where it is for now. The pieces are in place, though, especially on RAW, for improvements to be made to the IWC's psyche in the near future.

As a fan of all things Joss, I enjoyed it. Dushku was surprisingly good, but I've never been much of a fan of hers so I'm not one to talk.

I was surprised that they let Echo stay as Miss Penn to locate Davina. I totally thought that Joss would let the first mission end on a downer to show how harsh the Dollhouse is, but it was a nice resolution. Giving Miss Penn asthma and near-sightedness was amusing. I don't see how someone of her experience would have given the money over while the girl was still on the boat, though.

I like the naming conventions: Echo, Sierra. Then the document at the end said Alpha. Unless there are more sleeping chambers, I'm guessing there are only 5 actives at a time. Although there were way more people than that wandering around, so I'm probably wrong. If they are naming the actives in succession, is Sierra the 19th active? That would make Echo the fifth, and presumably one of the longest serving, except for Alpha. (The document said Alpha and eyes only... did that mean it was for Alpha-level eyes only, or was the document about Alpha and the eyes only implies classified status?)

Also, good to see Amy Acker again. Her shorter hair makes her look so much older than on Angel (then again, it has been 5 years or so since she was Fred...) I'm very curious about her scars.

I hope the executives at Fox are tracking DVR and Hulu usage. One would think they should know what to expect out of a Joss Whedon show with respect to ratings and rabid fanbases. At the very least I'll look forward to the season 1 DVD should Fox pull a Firefly again.

Sierra being the 19th would certainly be a logical conclusion (for me, anyway). There definitely were enough people wandering around to make me think there were more than five actives currently inside. (This would also explain the disappearance of the "Victor" active that was mentioned during the development process - the actor that was supposed to play that character ended up as the Russian guy Mr. FBI Guy put a scare into - because they just haven't gotten to that letter yet.)

Echo could be pretty long-tenured, but it's also possible that she simply replaced the previous Echo (either because her five-year turn was up, or she died in the line of duty, or snapped and went rogue like Alpha). We'll have to see what happens, since I'm pretty sure as Echo's pre-Dollhouse backstory gets filled in, we'll get a better idea of how long she's really been there (and why on earth she signed up for this gig in the first place).

In the preview for next week's episode, Langton said something to the effect of that Alpha could have killed Echo while he was escaping, but opted not to. That would imply the document is about Alpha (and that he likely was the first, and was probably driven insane by being repeatedly subjected to a process that wasn't quite refined yet).

I didn't see the preview! I've never noticed this before, but Hulu doesn't append them to the shows, do they?

If Sierra is just getting Activated (is that the right term?) could the Russian dude questioning the dollhouse lead to his involvement and transformation into Victor? And does that mean we'd see (or at least have occur, even offscreen) introductions for Tango and Uniform? Referencing this (en.wikipedia.org) shows some decent names like Mike or Oscar, or even the aforementioned Victor. But I can see Golf and Uniform going unused.

I liked it well enough, but were it not for the Joss factor I probably wouldn't keep watching.

My theory is that Sierra is FBI Agent Helo's ex-wife, since they showed her "initiation" close to when they talked about his destroyed marriage. That certainly gives him motivation to find Dollhouse.

I thought it was a good beginning. I was a little shocked to see Amy with the scars though, still cute with them. I do hope we see more Joss alumini as we go on. I do think the show does have a shelf life though.
