Which do you prefer... dollar bills or dollar coins?
I expect this to be the less popular answer, but for me, it's definitely dollar coins. I need to carry a lot of stuff in my wallet that makes it pretty thick without bills, and adding five or so dollar bills has a bigger effect on the thickness than one would think. (And I *hate* bulky wallets.)
I also have this weird superstition about Sacajawea golden dollars - I consider them lucky charms. For instance, I've made the same twenty-minute drive to my local mall the past two Saturdays. Two Saturdays ago, I didn't have any change in my pocket, and I hit practically every red light on the way there - but last Saturday, I had two golden dollars in my pocket, and I hit only one or two. Coincidence? I think not ;)
smark/net attack Advisory System Status is: Elevated (Holds; June 18, 2006) While the switch from Cena to RVD should alleviate some complaints, the inevitability of the belt's return to Cena (note where Summerslam is this year) and the poor initial showing by the new ECW are enough to keep the indicator where it is for now. The pieces are in place, though, especially on RAW, for improvements to be made to the IWC's psyche in the near future.
Dollar bills, no contest. Don't know that I've ever even used dollar coins. I hate coins in general- I only carry bills around with me. When I get change, I immediately put them away and only take them out again to wrap them and take them to the bank to exchange for dollars.

I give all dollar coins (when I get them which isn't very often) to the dunkettes and the little dunker. I keep all my paper money in a money clip in my front pocket so I don't have the same fat wallet problem that Texas Kelly is trying to avoid.
Bills. When I try to spend a dollar coin, the cashiers look at it like I'm giving them a doubloon. I like the look of the Sakajaewa coin though. Shame they don't catch on.

I was all set to favor the dollar coins when the Sacagewa ones came out, but it didn't work. I think mostly because you can't use dollar coins in any machines. Let's say all I've got is a dollar, and I want to buy a can of soda from a machine. If it's a dollar coin, I'm out of luck. If it's a dollar bill, then I'm in business. The dollar bill is more useful, therefore it's better.
And given the hatred and confusion that dollar coins seem to lead to in the general public (you work in retail, you get customers who don't even know if it's legal money), I can't see dollar coins ever catching on.

Bills. Sometimes, though, I'll buy the dollar coins (and half dollars) out of the tills at work, just to get rid of them. I take them home and put them in the change bank with all my other metal money.

A couple years ago for christmas my mom gave me $100 in Sacajaweas. i put them in a leather pouch and went around spending them like it was the 1800's.

The US Mint loves when money gets taken out of the general supply (as collector's items). It limits inflation. They love the state quarter's collecting thing for the same reason.

I do that with foreign money (especially Canadian). I have $37.03 Canadian so far. When I get to $50, I plan to take a trip to Canada to spend it.

After reading this thread, it reminds me of how much I miss dollar bills. As Haz stated, we've had dollar coins for a while now, as well as two dollar coins.
But what I wouldn't do to have the dollar and two dollar bills reintroduced. I hate carrying change.

In fact, that's part of the reason that starting next year, the Mint will be releasing a commemorative dollar-coin set of all the presidents, which will run from 2007 until at least 2015. Maybe longer if one or more of the past-presidents dies between now and 2013 (no president will be honored within two years of his death).

Similar to the dunkman, I keep all my ones, fives and tens in my front pocket and only keep twenties in my wallet (which by definition keeps my wallet skinny). I have no clue why I do this, but I have done this for as long as I can remember, which is a VERY long time.
Before spending time in Great Britain and Ireland, I thought dollar coins were dumb. After a week I learned to accept them and after a month learned to like them. For anything under a fiver, they are quite acceptable.
For the Mint, it means a form of tender that would last longer. I handle the till at alot of charity events and our Lions Club takes tickets at ball games for the school. Trying to deal with crumpled or roled up bills witht he line a mile deep is a pain. People don't take proper care of the folding stuff so I vote for coins.
Bills, only becuase on too many occassion, I have been running to the train and reached into my pocket and have given the paper guy a dollar coin instead of a quarter only to realize it after I got on the train. And there is no way I could go back in good conscious the next morning and ask for change.

I've got to go with dollar coins, actually. I've worked retail for way too long, which has both made me sick of seeing $1 bills and incredibly jaded toward the general public. As a result, I've got no problem with handing out dollar coins like candy. (On top of that, I work in a museum now, which makes it a learning experience. Knowledge is power.) On top of that, wandering around with a bunch of ones in my wallet really doesn't make me too happy.
Of course, the flipside to that is that if I were to use dollar coins exclusively, I couldn't really spend them anywhere. The confusion that I'd enjoy creating with dollar coins from the customer service side would be returned to me as a consumer. However, I don't use vending machines, which would at least be some kind of plus.
