| #1 Posted on 31.3.04 1914.58 | Instant Rating: 0.00 | Wondered if anyone could clear up a couple of things that I've always wondered about the inspired heel / annoying-as-all-hell face Doink the Clown.
Leaving out the Doink II character (Steve Keirn at Wrestlemania IX and some house shows) and Nick Dinsmore's one-off portrayal on Smackdown last year, I am interested to know the precise tenure and reasons for leaving of the other Doinks - in order (I believe)Matt Borne, Steve Lombardi and finally (according to who you believe) Phil Apollo or Ray Licachelli.
More specifically then, my questions are:
*I know that Borne was dismissed because of his substance abuse problems, but when did this original change take place? *Why was Lombardi replaced in the role? *Who is Phil Apollo? What other federations did/does he wrestle in and under what names? *Same question, only for Ray Licachelli? *I remember Doink appearing for a one-off appearance in changed tights and, mercifully, without Dink for a one-off squash against Razor Ramon some months after the character disappeared from WWF TV. Any idea about the reasons for this sudden, abortive resurrection and who was under the facepaint on this occasion? *And, finally, when, where and why was the Doink character turned face when his heel persona was so freaking cool?
Cheers!

However, the Honky Tonk Man, in his list of the worst Wrestmania Matches ever (actually comiled by Sean Careless), cites the match between Bigelow and Doink and WMX as number 8 on the list, and says the in this match Doink was played by Phil Apollo and not Licachelli. http://www.thehonkytonkman.com/ comment/81012846.shtml
I remember Phil Apollo wrestling as Phil Apollo in the WWF and in some other promotions a long time ago. Scotty Too Hotty mentions Phil Apollo as being instrumental in helping him break into the business. Read all about it here: http://www.liveaudiowrestling.com/ wo/news/interviews/default.asp? aID=4007
As for the true nature of Doink, it's possible that Licachelli is still out there, under the paint, and it's likely that few, dare I say almost none, even care.

I've heard a few different stories, from a few reliable sources. If I were a betting man, I would say somewhere right before Survivor Series 93, about two months after Doink turned face. Probably the reason for M.O.M. and Bushwhackers playing the part of the 4 doinks.
"*Who is Phil Apollo? What other federations did/does he wrestle in and under what names?"
Not sure, except for the fact he was a upper echelon job guy in the WWF for a maybe couple years prior to Doinks.
"*And, finally, when, where and why was the Doink character turned face when his heel persona was so freaking cool?"
In late 92 WWF in competition with MTV, by late 93 they were competing with Disney. Alot of which was to put on a good face during the steroid trials.

I used to go to indy shows around my area, about five or so years ago, and there seemed be a "Doink the Clown" wrestling. Funny thing is I actually have a indy Doink shirt that says "Doink World Tour 99" like he was trying to make a comeback. Anyways, there still flowing around like a bad memory that won't freaking go away. |
