Watching Doink get mauled by Chris Benoit last night reminded me what a wasted opportunity that WWE had with the Doink persona. The original (Matt Bourne) had a creepy edge to the character that made it effective, at least in the first few months before Doink became a glorified jobber. If WWE had tweaked the gimmick slightly and made Doink into less of a cartoon and more into a Joker-type character, it might've actually worked.

All right, I'm enjoying Rhyno's "man-beast" gimmick: He keeps his hair long, wears full-body wrestling tights with a big "R" on the back and uses the "Rhino Gore" as his finishing move. Can't you imagine him watching the Discovery Channel one day while tossing around possible gimmicks and having one of those "Hey, wait a second!" epiphanies during a rhino segment?

To spruce things up, the WWF should give Undertaker and Kane last names -- like Undertaker and Kane O'Brien, the O'Brien Brothers -- just for comedy's sake. Hopefully the door's still open.

RVD is approaching the always-exciting "The crowd loves him, but he's not getting a major push yet" phase which helps makes wrestling so much fun. It only happens once every few years -- Stone Cold in '96, The Rock in '98, Shawn Michaels in '93 and so on. -- ESPN's Bill Simmons back in 2001

Evil Doink WAS working until shortly before they turned him into a face. The Joker analogy is great, and Bourne was the perfect guy to pull that off. I think there were even some comparisons to Stephen King's Pennywise the Clown character at the time.

Unfortunately, timing was everything, and the then-family friendly WWF was determined to make Doink a face. There's no going back now.

I agree with you, a total wasted opportunity.

Click Here (ovwrestling.com) for a profile of Nick Dinsmore, the guy who played Doink. Bringing a guy known as 'Mr Wrestling' as a clown seems a bit strange, but then, I'm not a multi-millionaire.

Doink was going very well, with the coolest, creepiest entrance music ever, but the fans started getting into the evil clown character, so they turned him face and, like every cool heel that went face in the 90s, they completely eliminated everything that made him cool. (Sometimes they're a little smarter about it now, but this is still why I worry about that inevitable John Cena face turn.)

I think Dinsmore also played one of the Conquistadores the week before. What I've heard is that they want to bring him up, but they have no idea what to do with him, so they're sticking him in all these unrecognizable roles until they come up with an idea and then - no harm done, because who outside of the Internet would have any idea he was the guy in the Doink suit?

I realize it's just for comedy value, but Dinsmore is just terrible as Doink. He's so over the top with that damn strut that it's annoying. I wonder, though...if they tried to do Doink as a legitimate heel now, would he get over?

I think an Evil Doink would work now, just have him act like Stone Cold. To further the "Bad Ass" clown gimmick they could have a cooler of milk at ringside, and Doink could smash the milk cartons together and pour them down his mouth and chest(I would mark-out big time).

He could drive a clown car to the ring, and he could have a low-rider clown car, a monster truck, etc. etc.. He could torment children, because that would make him total heel. And like Trips and his sledgehammer, he could use a large carnival mallet. He could also carry spray paint, and paint Doink on his victims. Just mix all the attitude era in one character.

Never mind bringing back Doink -- bring back Borne Again.

(Not that I have any idea where Matt Borne is these days.)

That sounds like such a hideous pastiche that I think it could actually work. You could hate it on so many levels. Smarks and regular fans would be equally disgusted. That's marvelous.

That was one of Borne's gimmicks, wasn't it? The indy ring announcer would announce the tragic passing of Matt Bourne, and ask for a moment of silence and the ten-bell salute. And then Borne would come running down the aisle.

I'm not going to lie to you, there was a huge theory going around my high school that this was what the WWF was doing with Owen Hart, and given that it was Vince Russo behind it, I almost believed it. Denial is a scary thing.

This would be a natural for Doink, since he's a clown, and what do clowns do best? That's right, scare the living crap out of kids and give them nightmares.

I'm holding my breath for Evil Doink next week.

Back in the day, I hated Evil Doink at first because I thought "great now here's a clown". But over the course of a few weeks he won me over.

Then, he turned face and I stopped watching. Not because of him, but just because of general disinterest in the product, much why I am not currently watching.

Actually, a friend of mine mentioned something along these lines on another board:

'The new Sales Manager hired here at my office is none other than Ex Pro-Wrestler Doink the Clown.'

Whether it was Bourne or the lame ass babyface Doink, I didn't ask.

Probably completely out of left field, but does anyone know which Doink it was in the old Wrestlemania: The Arcade Game?

Just recalling a piece some magazine did on the filming of it, where Doink mentioned he worked for UPS ;)

I still believe that game had the best commentary out of any wrestling game too date. The only thing that comes close for me is Attitude for PS because just like in real life The Rock just never shut up...ever.

List of people who played Doink in the WWF:

Heel Doink(Survivor Series '92-Summer '93) was Matt Borne.
Face Doink(Fall '93-Late'94) was Ray Licatelli(sp)
Face Doink 2(Survivor Series '94) was Steve Lombardi

Current Doink is Nick Dinsmore with nothing better to do and keeping up with the trend of putting OVW guys with no future under hoods.

And don't forget the 6,000 or so indy Doinks.

I think the "AWA" that was touring some time ago was using one....I think they also tried to pawn off a "Super Dolphin"....
