This thread could also be considered when the politics forum crosses over into the wrestling forum. Now, going through the different security threat codes, under Code Red, all arenas would be shut down. With the geo-political situation in flux as we enter into Mania, what alternatives does Vince have if Code Red is instituted on Mania weekend? Could he possibly bring his crew over the Washington border into a Canadian arena that he could have contigency plans with; or, if the crew is not able to get to the West Coast, is Mania on the Roof a possibility? Considering the cash cow that the Mania PPV Buyrate provides to the sagging WWF/E corporate coffers, its difficult to believe Vince doesn't have some sort of contigency plan installed in order not to take a significant financial hit. Remember a 2.0 buyrate for Mania is around 35-40 million dollars.

Remember that Vince prided himself and gave himself a pat on the back for conducting "business as usual" after 9/11. If "Code Red" does come around, he'll find a way to keep business going. You can count on it.

Yeah, if it comes down to it, you'll see Vince in his backyard with a camcorder taping Test and Albert wrestle by the flowers, then rushing the tape over to the network.

We didn't have "code red" during the Gulf War. The "terrorism alerts" are a new development resulting from September 11th.

Anybody know if BC Place up in Vancouver has anything booked for Sunday? It is the closest dome with a comparable crowd to Seattle if the shit goes down once everybody is there...

I've heard differening reports. Some say that the minute war begins in Iraq (and Dubya's set to address the nation about, oh, 45 minutes from now, and I can't think of anything else he's going to say.), the terror alert will be moved to red. (That doesn't seem right to me, because my understanding of the stupid little color-coded system was that red essentially means "shit is blowing up right now". The last time the US would've been under Code Red would've been the morning of September 11th.)

I've also heard that they've developed a new level, called "Deep Orange" which will mean essentially what Orange was supposed to mean - a very hightened level of alert, except we've cried wolf on that one so many times when we needed a bill pushed through Congress or support of the war in Iraq or attention diverted away from Enron and the economy.

Code Red, from my understanding, means all government offices and building are closed, all arenas are shut down, and We're Fucked. I doubt that'll happen tonight, but, if any retalliation occurs, then Mania could be in jeopardy.

I don't mean to be rude or anything...but shouldn't the last thing we worry about in such an event in question be if whether or not the viewing of Wrestlemania XIX is delayed?

I hadn't thought of this.
I think it would take a LOT for Vince to change plans.
This is the man who continued a Pay-Per-View after a man fell to his death in the ring in front of thousands in attendance.

I do love the image of him in his backyard with a camcorder taping Test and Albert.

Thats one of the reasons why I'd be shocked if Vince didn't have the alternative location plan ready in case of emergency. PPV revenue and not wanting to provide a refund for it was one of the key reasons that PPV kept going, and for the PPV with the biggest price and biggest buy rate of the year, it would take an awful lot for Vince not to find a way to broadcast it, even if he has to go to Scott Keith's basement to find a location.

According to the Homeland Security folks...

4. High Condition (Orange). A High Condition is declared when there is a high risk of terrorist attacks. In addition to the Protective Measures taken in the previous Threat Conditions, Federal departments and agencies should consider the following general measures in addition to the agency-specific Protective Measures that they will develop and implement:

Coordinating necessary security efforts with Federal, State, and local law enforcement agencies or any National Guard or other appropriate armed forces organizations;
Taking additional precautions at public events and possibly considering alternative venues or even cancellation; Preparing to execute contingency procedures, such as moving to an alternate site or dispersing their workforce; and Restricting threatened facility access to essential personnel only.

5. Severe Condition (Red). A Severe Condition reflects a severe risk of terrorist attacks. Under most circumstances, the Protective Measures for a Severe Condition are not intended to be sustained for substantial periods of time.In addition to the Protective Measures in the previous Threat Conditions, Federal departments and agencies also should consider the following general measures in addition to the agency-specific Protective Measures that they will develop and implement:

Increasing or redirecting personnel to address critical emergency needs;
Assigning emergency response personnel and pre-positioning and mobilizing specially trained teams or resources;
Monitoring, redirecting, or constraining transportation systems; and
Closing public and government facilities

(Emphasis mine)

So technically Red is not the shit is going down, but it's pretty damn close.

Maybe they can tape all the matches in Stu Hart's basement?

While pro wrestling has always been an "enterprise" unto itself, it's worth noting how other sports and entertainment industries seem to be handling the impending war. The NCAA Tournament (sports.espn.go.com) The PGA Tour (sports.espn.go.com) NASCAR (nascar.com) and even The Oscars (eonline.com) all seem set to go on as scheduled, with just a few modifications (increased security; for the Oscars a more somber and toned down affair). Of course, as Ben Trout, Bristol's senior manager of communications points out in the NASCAR article, all that will go by the boards if a terrorist attack should occur on U.S. soil.

Bringing the discussion back to Wrestlemania, I would expect Vince to act in a manner similar to those mentioned above: business as usual while war is waging, complete cessation of public performances if the United States homeland is attacked. In the case of the latter, I would expect Wrestlemania to be postponed for a couple of Sundays, rather than attempting to keep the March 30 date at a different location.

Hopefully, this will be one of those "what if" scenarios that we will never have to confront; but if we should, that is how I would expect WWE to respond.
