Sure Edge is nowhere near being the wrestler Bret was but, for some reason, I've seen some similarities between Edge and Bret:
(1) Both are Canadian (obviously).
(2) When they were newbies in the WWF - they were silent 90% of the time.
(3) Both were in very successful tag teams.
(4) Both went on to win IC Title almost immediately after the break up of their tag team.
(5) Both have been King of the Ring.
(6) Both feuded with their younger brothers after they turned on them.
(7) Both have Scorpion Deathlock-like submission holds.
[I'd bring up Bret's "5 Moves of Doom" in comparison to Edge's "3 Moves of Doom" but I'll skip that]
Just noticed these things - that's all. If I hear something like the "Edge-cellence of Edgecution" or some other similar Heymanized moniker....
But regardless, IMO, Edge seems to be climbing up the WWF Ladder similar to the way Bret did.
The main problem is that Bret got this push when the main-eventers of the time (Hogan, Warrior, Savage, Flair) were on their way out for various reasons, while Edge is getting this push while the main-eventers (HHH, Rock, Austin) are still very much at the top of their game, and there's are 3 or 4 other young guys (Benoit, Jericho, Angle, even RVD) pretty far ahead of him in the pecking order. So I think the comparisons are going to end at about this point in time. Although remember, having both a submission and pinfall finisher seems to be the new mark of "hitting the big time" in the WWF.
As a seque, I'm LOVING Edge's new finisher. I always thought the implant DDT was ultra-weak looking unless the reciepient really jumps into it and does the Val Venis sell.

I wish they were setting up Edge to be ANYTHING. Right now, I don't feel like they are. Although I understand why.
When they finally do get around to setting up Edge to be something, I don't think "old-school technical wrestler" (which was always what you came back to with Hart) is going to be a part of it... I think it'll be "here's the good looking, semi-dorky, funny guy." I'm not sure whether or not Christian will be a part of it.
I think what Edge really needs is a hot feud with someone. Maybe with Kurt Angle. But it needs to be an extended program, something along the lines of Steve Austin/Bret Hart form 96-97. This program with Regal is doing nothing for him. But I don't think it's too fair to complain about Edge's push. He had a long run with the IC title, he was King Of The Ring, he's on just about every Raw and Smackdown, he always has a match on the PPVs. So maybe he's not headed to the main event right now, but he's doing pretty good for himself.
The Figure-Four Edgelock is just the cool-looking finisher that Edge needs to put him over the top. The DDT is too normal a move to be someone's finisher.
I was born in a manger, like that other guy. You know, he wore a hat?
