Sorry if this is a little off-topic...

I'm going to 'Mania in Detroit but I've been hearing a lot of horror stories about how dangerous it is there. There doesn't seem to be much in the way of tourist literature here in England so I don't know what to beleive.

Can anyone give me their opinion/ reassure me?

Cheers

I've visited Detroit, and I don't care too much for it. I found the people to be rude, and it to be a really dirty city.

With that said, I think one of your best bets, is to find a hotel in Windsor, Ontario...it'll be cheaper, the people are nicer, and it's easy access to Detroit. In fact, the WWE has a link concerning transportation from Windsor to Detroit.

I live in Detroit (Hamtramck to be exact) and I like it. There's plenty of nice hotels to stay at in downtown Detroit and there is such a huge police presence in the area that it's quite safe. There's a lot of good bars around Ford Field and I highly recommend the Detroit Brewing Company to taste REAL American (Michigan) beer and not that Coors Light shit.

I hope you enjoy it and Wrestle Mania, I'll be going too. The best way to describe the horror stories of Detroit can be summed up by the great Chuck D "Don't believe the hype".

Also, if you want any more info you can feel free to contact me via AIM at kdawg422 or email - kglapoin@hotmail.com I'll try to help as best I can.

I like Stroh's beer. However, the Detroit brewery has long been closed just like Black Label, Blatz, etc etc. They're all consolidated and made in one two breweries own by Miller or Heilmann and made in either Milwaukee or Texas.

In my original post I indicated that the place was the Detroit Brewing Co, but it's actually called the Detroit Beer Co. Just in case anyone tried to research it...

Additionally, if you're looking for something to do while in Detroit I'd say just go to both ROH shows on the Friday and Saturday before WM23. I'll be going to both and the venue is only 8 miles away from Ford Field seeing as it's located at the corner of 8 Mile and Woodward. And you might even get lucky and get shot by Eminem!

Cheers for the advice & reccomendations...

I've been trying to convince my girlfriend to go to the ROH shows already but I'm not sure how likely it will be (Mania was hard enough!). We've got a hotel booked noabout a mile from Ford Field so I will have to check out this brewery...

I was planning on doing a bit of car rental and driving whilst I was over...any places worth a drive to?

I've lived here in Detroit all my life, and it's not *that* bad. It's generally not a great place to look at, but it's not the cesspit reputation makes Detroit out to be. People aren't rude either, or at least not any ruder than any place else. Certainly better than New Yorkers or LA folk. Detroit Beer Co. is a damn good place, I also recommend Big Buck which is about 35 minutes north of downtown on I-75. Another place for great beers.

As for places to drive to, I'm not really up on that. If you're into semi-touristy cities, there's Frankenmuth. It's only around a hour and a half or so north. Everything in the city is German-themed, lots of shops and restaurants (with the notable one being Zehnder's) and such. I always visit at least thrice a year.

I'm not from Detroit, I live about 100 miles up the way in Saginaw, but I frequent Detroit a bit. As for tourist-y things, I'd recommend Greek Town and/or the casino. There's also the super huge Great Lakes Crossing mall just a few miles up I-75.

I don't see the appeal of Frankenmuth, myself. I don't find Zehnder's "world famous chicken" to be all that good. Although, with WWE being in town and all, there's a good chance that Mick Foley will stop by Bronner's at some point, which is a year round giant Christmas shoppe.

I should try to get something together for my band that weekend and invite all you Weiners to come out to a real Detroit dive bar for some live music.

I thought the Summer Rae match was great, but I'm biased. NXT is the only WWE product I watch on an even remotely consistent basis.
