Finally! For many of us US 'WHO' fans, Doctor Who is back on Sci-Fi tonight, Friday July 6th with two installments-- the Christmas special preceding season/series three, "The Runaway Bride" at 6:00pm Mountain Time (8pm Eastern), followed by the season premiere, "Smith and Jones," at 9:30pm EST.

I've been looking forward to the new season for what seems like forever, and have done my best to try and keep away from spoilers --well, I was compelled to see what the whole deal was on John Saxon, just because it was all over the official Doctor Who website at bbc.co.uk a week or two ago.

I would highly recommend to anyone who hasn't watched Doctor WHO yet to give it a go, since I think tonight's two episodes are a good starting point for new viewers. Plus, Russell T. Davies 'WHO' is, simply put, good TV!

I'll certainly be chiming in with my thoughts of "Bride" and "Smith and Jones" soon enough.

So, fellow 'W'HO fans out there-- we've got ourselves a thread!

And I haven't spoiled a thing! Besides this thread already, anyway.

I've actually already seen the first four or five episodes of this upcoming season and I love this show. This isn't come from a Who fan either, this show is completely new to me. Everyone should definitely check it out, easily better than most of the summer television.

Hmmm.

In the Xmas episode, the Army destroyed the Empress' ship "on orders from Mr. Saxon."

...and Mr. Saxon being referred to on the radio in "Smith and Jones," not to mention the "Vote Saxon" signs. Maybe a recurring theme for the season!

I loved these two episodes. Absolutely fantastic. I'll keep my comments brief for the moment, and chime in more in-depth after I get a chance to mull it over some (and watch the replays!), but what I will say now is that I can't wait for next Friday! If these two episodes are any indication of what the rest of the third season/series is like, than Russell T. 'WHO' series three will absolutely blow away seasons one, two, and pretty much anything else offered from the classic series, much as I love original 'WHO.'

And, because it absolutely needs to be mentioned, but Freema Agyeman (Martha Jones) is unbelievably hot! She may not be Billie Piper, but I can already see that she and David Tennant will mesh well. Plus, she's hot.

Did I mention that Freema Agyeman is hot?

The Judoon are great. Logical, big, oafish, menacing, and yet, kinda' endearing, too. Thank goodness Doctor WHO has a good budget, because it really helps in spades.

I thought I said I'd be brief right now, but how can I when Doctor WHO is so cool, so much fun, and so well done?
I think I must've said this for every episode of season two 'WHO' that was discussed in previous threads, but I'll say it again-- Russell T. and company have done it again.

Welcome back, Doctor WHO!

Just a few thoughts.

I really liked these episode's. More so then the first two episode's last season.

Getting killed by a straw is awesome. Also was I the only one who thought the reactions to the people in the hospital looking out the window a little ridiculous?

Other than that I loved both episode's and David Tennant is becoming one of my favorite actors.

Quick note my TV info says that Doctor WHO stars Billie Piper

I like bananas.

I think you could have a drinking game with how many times the Doctor says "That's impossible!!" I think we got up to five or six tonight.

I'm gonna give this thread a little bit of a bump, just in case some fellow W's wanted to comment in timely fashion before the next WHO installment *cough*JALman*Davros*to name a couple*cough*

"The Runaway Bride"- I loved this episode. I still don't understand why some tend to criticize Russell T. Davies' writing. If there was any improvement needing on his storytelling, we definitely see it here. This episode is well-paced, and definitely allows Catherine Tate to shine. Her character Donna was quite idiosyncratic yet endearing. Tate's performance is great; IMO she becomes an instant fan favorite.

And how about that Queen of the Racnoss(sp)? So OTT (over-the-top) yet such a fun villain! The production team did a superlative job with her. I loved how her eyes all blinked at the same time. She was completely off her rocker, frantic, and pretty damn funny too. I laughed pretty good when Donna tried to swing to safety only to undershoot the landing the Doctor was standing on and fell to the floor. Even the Queen of the Racnoss' reaction was like, "Ouch!"

I think that for anyone who would have critiques or criticisms of this, they ought to bear in mind that this episode was the Christmas Special in between seasons and did not have to introduce a brand new Doctor to the world. This show is quintessential WHO rompage, and yet Davies is still able to seamlessly tie in some subtle commentary about how people should be treated. This show had to be a fun one, because as we've seen in the two previous seasons/series, the happenings throughout the season tend to get increasingly more intense and menacing, and I am sanguine in my feeling that season three will be no different. "Bride" is a very fun show. Oh! And I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the TARDIS-taxi chase in this episode. ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC!

"Smith and Jones"- Didn't I mention already that Freema Agyeman is hot? Anyway, this is a great opener for the third season. I like the Doctor's somewhat inauspicious entry into the episode-- a seemingly inconsequential running-into Martha (Agyeman) where he just hands her his tie. You already know from that moment that Martha will be swept into irrevocably life-changing events. Agyeman's already won me over. Aside from her obvious presence on-screen, she plays Martha with a great deal of conviction. Because we as viewers are already well-seated in the world of WHO, she doesn't need to be the eyes of the viewer as much as Billie Piper was as Rose, and yet, we can appreciate the gravity (or lack thereof-- the Moon, eh, bad attempt at humor) of the situation Agyeman finds herself in. And while everyone on Earth at this point has already witnessed a spaceship flying into Big Ben, the Sycorax AND Daleks fighting Cybermen across London's sky, it was a great touch for Martha to mention to the Doctor that her cousin died during the Dalek-Cybermen battle. Earth has certainly not been desensitized to their new "We are not alone" reality.

The Judoon are great additions to the plethora of WHO aliens and monsters. Once again, the production doesn't fail with them. And their spaceships landing on the moon was a TREMENDOUS visual, only outdone by the hordes of Judoon emerging from said ships!

I do find it a bit amusing too, Teapot, how much the Doctor says, "That's impossible!" If it shocks the Doctor, it's gotta be pretty shocking, eh? And another thing that amused me about the Doctor in this episode was that, in order to get his genetic trace on Martha, he just HAD to kiss her. You know, the Doctor could've simply just kissed Martha's hand, right? But NO! Big ol' kiss right on the lips! Hey-- the Doctor's got good taste! And if *I* was the Doctor, I would've kissed Martha too! Did I mention already that Freema-- oh, I think I did.

This is a great start to the new season!

Series Three, how exciting! I'd first make a recommendation for The Infinite Quest. It's animated and supposedly aimed for younger audiences, but it'll satisfy Whovians who want a New Series adventure beyond Earth. Hopefully, it'll come out on the third series DVD in full.

It's more than "maybe," since Mr. Saxon was leading the polls by 64% during the time of Love & Monsters.

The topper of all catchphrases is "I'm (so) sorry." I'll probably file that under "Time Lord angst."

Sucking through the straw is inventive creepiness. The crew are very good portraying strong ideas without blowing the budget/relying on the CGI crutch. I'm not saying that using CGI is inherently bad, but a lesser production team would've made ol' Auntie red-faced.

I thought it was reasonable as they were startled to be teleported to the moon. Then again, I'll have to watch that part again to see if anything out of the ordinary happened.

It was really nice to see a neutral alien race like the Judoon to make the cosmos less black-and-white.

The Racnoss Queen was also impressive with those many eyes closing and imposing stature. Watching all of this series I can now see the purpose and intensity of the Tenth Doctor in what I originally thought was not a good episode. No one reacted when the Doctor actually mentioned "Gallifrey?"

Re: Martha Jones
Despite what the naysayers think, I like the character. She's less uncertain about her life than Rose as she's persuing a career as a medical doctor. Now let's see how she handles time travelling!

You aren't lying about that! Just off the top of my head... well, let's see what kinds of messed up things The Master has done that qualifies him as arguably THE most despicable villain in all of Doctor WHO. In fact, one could almost classify his actions as: against the Time Lords, against the galaxy in general, against Earth-- all as species to the genus of being against The Doctor, and miscellaneous EVILNESS~! just because he's an a$$hole! (Undoubtedly, if he was put on some kind of galactic trial for this, he would totally be executed--oh wait... he was!):

He stole information from the Matrix on Gallifrey to find and steal a doomsday weapon on the planet Uxarius that actually created the nebula from which Earth was created-- intending its use for galactic domination and devastation;

He trapped The Doctor in the Matrix and tried to kill him within the Matrix via the Chancellor of the High Council of the Time Lords; he also picked off The President of the High Council of the Time Lords;

He brought the Nestene Autons back to Earth in order to screw our planet good and proper; he stole a nuclear missile to be launched against China (I believe) to start a Third World War and thus, screw our planet good and proper; he went back into Earth's history on at least two known different occasions to affect the progress of humanity and thus, screw our planet good and proper; he tried to start a war between humanity and the Sea Devil race just to revel in the potentiality of unimaginable death, killing and mayhem, hence, ensuring that our planet would be screwed good and proper (sense a theme?); he made a bargain with a space parasite called Axos so that Axos could suck the Earth dry by its 'nutrition cycle.' This would guarantee BOTH The Doctor's humiliation (since he was exiled to Earth at that point) and the screwing of our planet good and proper; he pitted the Galactic Federation of Planets and The Draconian Empire into an intergalactic war that would have opened the door for Dalek domination throughout space ONLY for The Master to then double-cross the Daleks and claim the universe for himself to of course, screw-- well, you know, but well ahead of us in the future(!);

He's also whacked people by shrinking them with a matter compression gun-- In one instance, he almost singlehandedly committed genocide on the planet Logopolis: he shrink-killed almost every single Logopolitan en route to trying to conquer the galaxy. In another instance, he shrunk to death a scientist's assistant named Gooch;

He's neck-chopped fools left and right;

He led Cybermen to their slaughtering at the hands of the Raston Warrior Robot; he's hypnotized others to do his bidding, often times resulting in their own deaths; he fabricated an ENTIRE planet, its population and its history JUST to trap The Doctor; well, I'm sure you see what I'm saying here-- The Master is OFF HIS ROCKER!

And all because The Master seeks to not only make The Doctor's life a living hell, but to ultimately embarrass, humiliate, torment and kill The Doctor. That's the only motivation he's had that keeps his maniacal ass alive! I'll give him this, though... dude's a dedicated, persistent SOB!

May there be mercy on The Doctor if The Master tries to humiliate and annihilate him again!

(And to shill the original series, if any of you are curious as to the sheer degree of The Master's complete and utter lunacy and heinosity, I highly recommend finding original series-stories with The Master. His feud with The Doctor is legendary. Holmes-Moriarty, eat your hearts out!)

*CRZ, Guru-- apologies if this seems like just a list. If you guys feel like this reply is simply that (or if it's plainly obtuse), please feel free to delete it! :)

Well, all of what is stated above but added to boot... The Master could be the Doctor's brother. For instance, the Doctor called him Jehosephat in "The Five Doctors".

I believe that in the novelisation done by Target Books in the eighties, Terrance Dicks wrote a small aside before their conversation stating (not verbatim) "... the Doctor noticed a familiar sihouette from his younger days" or something close to that. There were allusions that the MAster and Doctor had been to the Death Zone before- but how so if Rassilon used it during the days he ruled Gallifrey?

Really quick for the Guru and CRZ... Much like last season, can we keep this thread up and bump it each week instead of starting new threads every week? Also, do you have the ability to change the title to something like Doctor Who Season Three on Sci Fi? Just a thought. Thanks everyone.

It wouldn't kill you to start a new thread every week... like we do for every other show that people talk about in this forum. Also, some people like being able to click on the thread icon and get a collection of all of the threads on one page.

As someone who usually only does "new threads" viewing, I had no idea you could do that with the icons. neat.

Awesome idea. I think that he'll die somehow, since the show never has been or ever will be about happy endings. I think I caught something in the season premiere that may have foreshadowed his undoing.
