I actually bothered to read the thread now. Are you saying that in California, the state that produces more milk than any other, milk from a cow is $5 per half gallon?

Here in America's Dairyland (which we claim on the basis of production per capita), our gas station (which has prices higher than grocery stores) sells gallons of whole milk for $3.59.

You didn't read very hard. His fancy-shmancy organic milk from the family farm which uses glass bottles and all the cows get full body massages is $5 a half gallon.

I buy store brand milk! On a VERY good week, it's $1.98 a gallon. Usually it's $3.39 a gallon. At Costco, it's $2.59 a gallon.

I am blissfully ignorant about how good the organic stuff is because I'm sure it would ruin me for life, and I can't afford it. It's already bad enough that I occasionally splurge and pick up the $5/lb butter from the Hope Creamery direct from Hope, MN. (Store brand butter is $1.50/lb when I buy it on sale)

Believe me, I'm anything but a vegetarian, but milk is just too nauseating a concept for me to handle.

Just curious (honest - no ulterior motive other than a desire to know): Do you eat cold cereal? If so, what do you use in place of milk? Because I just can't imagine eating Cheerios or Wheaties or Rice Krispies or what-have-you without some form of milk; be it whole, low-fat, skim, soy, almond, etc.

Which, by the way, leads to my answer to the thread's question: Yes, I drink milk, because there are certain meals and snacks that I believe taste better with milk than with any other beverage. So if I'm having cold cereal, or eggs, or cookies, or cake, or tuna salad, I'm drinking milk.

People do many thing differently from the other animals.

Plenty of species of animals eat eggs. Other animals don't raise other animals - so it would be hard for them to get the milk of one. I suspect if they could raise other animals, they would drink milk.

Eggs are just as "gross" if you want to start to think that animal products are gross. Me, I think they are tasty.

Protein is good.

See, that doesn't bother me, but I AM kind of intrigued at how our ancestors decided it would be cow milk that was THE stuff. I mean, it's not instinctive, right? There much have been some experimentation that I just don't want to know about.

That question had me sitting and pondering. The only explaination I can come up with is that because chickens don't produce it. Time well wasted!

I drink too much milk, methinks. I burn through about 3 gallons a week personally, usually 2%, but I'll drink whatever I can get my hands on. Sometimes straight out of the container, but only if there's only a little left and nobody's looking. One time there was soy milk in the fridge; what a dirty trick that was. Almost as bad as the time I downed half a quart before realizing there were chunks floating in it; at least when I showed the guy at 7-11 he let me have another, fresher quart.

And no, I didn't come here today with the intent of making people ill.

Of course, barn cats will follow lactating cows in order to drink what they leak and will clean the jaws and noses of young nursing calves for the milk that's left behind. (Calves are sloppy eaters )

And from experience, I can tell you it can be quite a bad idea to let them have it. Gives many of them quite the runny tummy.

Ignoring the taste factor, I figure it comes down to a combination of the amount of milk they can produce and how compliant they are when you try to get it out of them. Sure, having an elaborate scheme to get cheap milk from rats looks perfectly feasible, but YOU try finding enough of the buggers willing to hold still while you milk 'em to make the venture worthwhile.

EDIT - They're also pretty useful animals to have around for other purposes (cow tastes GREAT and leather clothing is swanky AND waterproof) and they don't eat what we do, which back in the day would've been a big plus point for having them around. I've been thinking about this waaaay too much....(end edit).

On the original question, yes and semi-skimmed, which I guess is like your 2%. Full fat stuff is just too creamy for me, but the skimmed stuff is no more than coloured water.

I'm the same way, but I've never drank it with chunks in it or anything. I go for 1-2 percent, and its best when its really cold, but not cold enough to have ice in it. Thankfully the missus only drinks it in cereal or rarely with brownies or cookies, and the little one is too little to drink a lot of it. Which means more for me!

There is no better snack than a hand full of Oreos and a big glass of milk. I think that most of my milk consumption is with either Oreos or Cap'n Crunch (with crunchberries).

Nilla wafers. And now I have a craving for Crunchberries. I haven't had them in at least 10 years. Good times.

I cook with milk and eat it on cereal. I will sometimes drink it with hot gooey brownies, but only in small quantities. If I have more than about 4oz it upsets my tummy. I do eat a lot of cottage cheese and yogurt and take calcium suppliments.

My grandmother has always been a huge proponent of milk, and I can remember at least on occasion where I was not allowed to leave the table until I drank two 8oz glasses.

There was a time in my late teens that I couldn't drink milk (or eat ice cream) at all, and switched to almond milk, non-dairy creamer (for cereal), and soy. I've found that it's a pain to cook with milk substitutes, and creamer on your cereal never tastes quite right. I like almond and soy milk, but don't like the sediment that can collect in the bottom, even if it is harmless, my milk shouldn't have a texture.

As dMr alludes to up above, most cats have difficulty digesting milk once they're not kittens anymore.

According to this link (vet.cornell.edu), "Most cats [...] lose the enzyme, lactase, necessary to help them digest lactose, a sugar present in milk."

While I personally prefer cow milk, it should be pointed out that (as can be read here (motherearthnews.com) and here (nfib.com)) more of the world's people consume goat milk than cow milk. It should also be mentioned that according to this site (sheep101.info) sheep were milked before cows. That same site also claims that sheep milk is richer in vitamins A, B, and E, calcium, phosphorus, potassium, and magnesium than cow milk. So it appears that the world's jury is still out as to which animal gives the best milk.

I'm not a biologist, and I'm not one prone to assumption, but logically speaking, wouldn't the best milk for a human be generated by a human? Milk, be it from any mammal, is generally made to best suit the young of that same mammal. I'm not suggesting that we should all go around drinking breast milk, nor do I even know the nutritional value of it, it just seems like it makes sense to me.

PETA will push for this every once in a while. The latest I heard is that they asked Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream to replace the milk in their ice cream with human milk. I assume it's one of their false choices, as there is a percentage of adults (the majority, even?) who would find the thought of consuming human milk disgusting.

That's because the milk industry for years and years has told people cow milk is incredibly healthy. There was a point in time when the majority of adults would have been certain smoking cigarettes was not a major health risk, and every single one of them was wrong. Healthy and unhealthy standards are not determined by democratic measures.

For me, 2% and almost ice cold is the way to go, though I only drink it with cereal and certain foods: cookies or anything chocolate, PB&J sandwiches and spaghetti (I don't know why, I just like it with spaghetti).
