In an effort to get more stuff going in the Music section of the W-board I'm going to give reviewing the show I went to a try. Let's see what happens...
Tonights venue is a place in Hamtramck called Small's http://www.smallsbardetroit.com FYI, Hamtramck is a city located inside of Detroit due North of the downtown Detroit area.
The lineup is as follows, Chapstik, MAN, Bang Bang and Disengage in that order. As a sidenote, before Chapstik began we went to a dive bar called The Norwalk which is on the same steet as Small's. While there I purchased many Miller High Life's for $1.50 a piece and a shot of Hennesey for only $2! Cheapest bar prices I have EVER seen.
So, we get back to Small's and Chapstik is just starting and my friend notes about how they look familiar despite us never seeing them play before. As it turns out, members of Chapstik are also in a band called Glori5 that we saw last week at the Magic Stick in Detroit. Chapstik was just as great as Glori5 (both of them from Ypsilanti, MI) as they knew how to play the rock and roll. Just really good rock music that was heavy but not hardcore heavy. Afterwards, my friend complimented the female guitarist and she gave him 2 free CDs...he being nice pays off!
Next up is MAN and he is quite eclectic I'd say. MAN consists of one man, his microphone, his bass guitar and his bass drum. GENIUS! Song titles included "FUCK THE TEAM" and "God damn the Christians". I guess most people would just look at him and say hey it's just some asshole with his bass guitar and bass drum but I liked his intensity and thought his songs were pretty funny.
On to Bang Bang (and yes I did do the Cactus Jack thing with my hands, I couldn't stop myself) as a rare occurence in the land of indy/local bands occured...they all didn't suck! In addition, the venue became flooded with people as apparently Bang Bang has a HUGE following. They played some really good hardcore and get mad props for their crowd participation. At one point one of the guitarists came to the crowd and just threw himself on the floor and continued to play without missing a note as the crowd spun him around by his feet!
Anyways, that's about all...we didn't stay around for Disengage since we didn't want to risk them sucking and ruining an awesome night Sorry it was so long, let me know what you think. If this gets at least one Detroit area person excited about the local scene we have then I'd say my job has been well done.
Next friday I should be in Lansing seeing Sah. They're from the upper peninsula of MI, Ishpeming/Marquette area to be exact. I've seen them dozens of times before and this time should be just as great.
EDIT: Click Here (macsbar.com) for Mac's bar webpage, that's where Sah and others will be playing in Lansing.
As I'm not a big Kathy Mattea fan myself, there's not much I can give you in the way of personal recommendations. IMHO her best single was "Eighteen Wheels And A Dozen Roses", while her best overall album (again, IMHO)
