Bulls' Derrick Rose tears ACL
CHICAGO -- Chicago Bulls guard Derrick Rose suffered a torn ACL in his left knee and will miss the rest of the season, the team announced Saturday.
Rose suffered the injury while trying to leap off his left foot in the lane with 1:22 left in Saturday's playoff game against the Philadelphia 76ers.
Rose was helped off the court before the Bulls sealed their 103-91 Game 1 win. Rose had 23 points, nine rebounds and nine assists when he was injured.
The path to the Finals couldn't go any easier for Miami, could it?

When you're playing on an injured groin and an injury ankle, it's not too surprising something else is going to break. It may have happened anyway, but it sure feels like it was an overcompensating breakdown. It doesn't sound like Rose needed to be out there at the end, but it may have just happened in minute four in Game 2. Or later in the playoffs. Or in the Olympics (gosh, there are going to be a lot more broken down basketball players by the end of this calender year with the compressed schedule -> Olympics -> right back to another season.)
This not only takes out a possible championship winning season (how many of those do you really good in any stars career?), but makes the future very uncertain for the Bulls. If they had won, everything was going to be great. If they had lost with what they had, they could easily let go of Carlos Boozer and maybe trade out Rip Hamilton for a more healthy model. There was a clear direction either way. There isn't one now. We're lucky to be in a time where full recovery from ACL injuries is the standard, but this is going to have ramification on his team going forward.

This is interesting since I think Boston is the only team in the East that stands a chance of beating Miami. My only thought was that the Celtics could get upset by Atlanta or would lose to the Bulls in the second round. The Hawks upset isn't likely to happen and now the path through Chicago just got a lot easier. That said...the Bulls still played pretty well this season without Rose in the lineup. I still expect them to roll Philly and give their second-round opponent a run for the money.

Regular season game, you could question the coach for having Rose in at that point. Playoff game, quick 3, turnover quick 3 and all of a sudden it is a 2 possession game with a minute to go, so you can't screw around taking your starters out of the game. The odds of Philly pulling that off are minimal, but, just looking at the guy doing the game on TNT (Reggie Miller) and that Game 1 against the Knicks is a constant reminder. |
