Click Here (cbc.ca) for more info. I'm a part of the group who is staying behind for two months to close up the shop. After that, I'll be unemployed (hopefully I have something before that time comes).

And the same group of my ex co-workers that were let go 2 years ago from Bell are back on the unemployment line yet again, after being promised the world when they jumped ship.

The call centre industry is a nasty business.

It's got to be related to the dollar. I can't imagine that Canadian call centers are more cost effective than U.S. centers right now considering that the dollar has dropped so much to the Canadian dollar.

Back when I was in the call center business we had a center in Canada that was around $.60/min when we had to charge around 20-30 cents more per minute. I bet it is much closer now.

CSRs are unfortunately seen as a commodity.

Yup, the dollar parity is pretty much the the main reason. Two years ago they were getting North American support for 80 cents to the dollar. Now....not exactly. They can just pull some of it back to the US for the same price, and you guys could probably use the extra jobs right now.

The writing's been on the wall for awhile. I'm glad I can fit in another two months of paychecks though. Of course, the problem is now FINDING work after this.

The Dell call centre in Edmonton was built with so many concessions and perks, rumour has it that the civic government is going to sue them for closing early. Umong other incentives, they weren't even paying any property tax. They pretty much had the land they built their call centre on GIVEN to them.

I don't mean any disrespect, but I would much prefer to deal with locals (read Canadians or Americans) when it comes to technical support.

The laptop I own is a Dell, but the service I've received through their toll free tech support is seriously lacking; I doubt I'll be making a repeat purchase when this system bites the bullet.

I bet you'll get a lot more people with Southern US accents on tech support calls. Places where minimum wage and tech wages are low and land is cheap.

I'd rather a friendly Southern accent than an East Indian accent.

No offence intended.

For those taking tally, Greyhound's national call centre is in Texas.

Hell, I'm a liberal Dem and I think goverments granting concessions for things like this is just plain stupid.

And I have dealt with Indian call centers on some matters and while tha accent was a tad difficult, the help rendered was okay.

Well, the current plan is to that the consumer support is heading off-sore (and I can't blame them; the savings are huge). It *was* a great two years, and I made sure to get lots of training in (even got my A+).

Ironically, HP is apparently moving their support back to North America (this seems to happen in cycles), and Ottawa has been mentioend a sa possibility. If they do it'd be a smart move, as there's obviously a lot of people around here who would likely take a job there.

If it's Richard "Kinky" Friedman, I suppose it's possible. It's going to be fun to see him try, anyway. The New Yorker had a big writeup about his campaign, which seems to focus on education reform and slowing down the executions.
