ESPN is reporting that Washington, DC is offering to fully finance a baseball stadium if MLB will move the Expos there. Full story here.

Could this finally happen? I've always looked on the Expos as that one story that would never get resolved. Every year there'd be that lingering question of what would happen to them, yet they'd never move. Now that someone has apparently called MLB's bluff, their hand could very well be forced.

As much as it sucks to lose the only non-Jays team within driving distance, I can't say I'm all that broken up about the prospect of the Expos moving south. Montreal clearly does not deserve a baseball team, and it's gotta be nothing but endless frustration for management developing players who leave and become stars elsewhere because they're working with less than peanuts in their budget.

Whatever happens, it would just be nice to see a conclusion. Now I guess we wait and see what kind of a fit Peter Angelos has over this...

It will be very interesting to see this play out. The Orioles don't want competition that close. If there is any justice, it will happen ASAP.

That's the deal MLB has been holding out for. I don't think they'll be picky enough to insist on a downtown site, although it'd help.

If it all lines up good, all that's left is paying off Angelos and they'll probably announce it by the All Star Break.

Oh yeah Washington DC sports program. Those ALWAYS work out. But hey if it succeeds I'd be happy. Be happier if it got to Portland, but that's unlikely.

Hey don't forget us down here!

Norfolk Expos? (home.hamptonroads.com)

I think its cool that Robert Johnson is getting behind the effort here, and I think it would cool to have a big league team here, in the long term I don't think our area would be a good fit. We have a large military community but at the expense of almost any other big money industry. There just isn't a lot of corporate money here, which is why we missed out on the NHL expansion six years ago. But we do have a popular AAA franchise here, the Norfolk Tides, with a beautiful Stadium in downtown Norfolk. Maybe it could work, but I couldn't see MLB picking us over Portland or DC.

I agree. The sports market in DC is oversaturated as it is, with all the DC/Baltimore teams. And Peter Angelos will likely raise hell about it and probably slow down any plans for Les Expos to move there. I just get the impression that the team won't develop a solid fan base, especially if they continue to lose as they do (just look at the Capitals and the Wizards). I think Portland would really stand behind their team through thick and thin and develop a good fan base, as baseball would be a novelty for them (see Rockies, Colorado). The Mariners are up in that neck of the woods, but the two teams would not be in such close proximity like the Orioles and the DC Expos would be, and this would allow for separate fan bases, as fans in Portland would likely stick close to home rather than taking the near 3 hour drive up to Seattle to take in a baseball game. Plus, add in the fact that the Blazers are the only other source of professional sports entertainment, and the baseball team would would the center of attention for the city from May-September, without the Blazers playing.

If this area can't support a minor league hockey team and the Arena TWO team folds, why in the world would MLB work here? We'd probably draw worse than the Expos do in Montreal now.

The Washington Post did an article last year at O's Day here in the DC area, and most of the Northern VA people, and DC area MD people, interviewed said they are only O's fans because they are the closest team. And by closest, they meant the only team in the area. The next closest teams are in PA (Philly and Pittsburgh).

The Northern VA people spend 3 hours doing a hour drive in rush hour because it's the O's or nothing for baseball. If DC got a team, they'd flock to it because it would be closer.

It's unrealistic for Angelos to claim all of the DC metro area of MD, the Northern VA counties, the western counties (not in the panhandle) of MD, and southern MD. He knows in his heart that they will all flock to DC baseball, not because they don't like the O's, but because driving up I-95 (or I-295, the BW Parkway) to Camden Yards in rush hour is a bitch.

One thing that DC had going for them is that RFK is RIGHT THERE. Only DC United is using it, unless we still have that Lacross team. And RFK is pretty much subway accessable, just like the MCI Center.

You know, just so long as it stays within the beltway, Traffic will never suffer. Oh wait, traffic's going to suffer no matter what.

If they did go with a ballteam in the DC area, it'd be on the VA side, within the beltway. The 'Skins moved north, it's only fair to make the stadium somewhere like McLean, IE as far away as possible to Baltimore, but still within the beltway and along a metro route.

And as stupid as that sounds, somebody's probably already thought of it.

Doesn't matter if he hit him. The point was made, and Clemens couldn't throw inside either. Besides, as has been said before, Estes homered off of him... that's better revenge, as far as I care.
